PWINSIDER Q & A: PUNK-JERICHO TEAM, LESNAR'S UFC PROMO, VINCE AND ECW, WARRIOR UPDATE AND MORE

By Dave Scherer on 2009-07-20 10:00:00

What do you think of Jericho picking CM Punk as his partner and letting Punk defend the World Heavyweight title and the unified tag titles?

That could be pretty interesting, no doubt, but part of me wonders why "Jericho would do that" when he should want the World Title himself.  His character isn't exactly someone who puts others before himself.  Now, if they had him take Punk as his partner as a way to get to the World Title, that would make sense.  It would definitely make for an interesting scenario and should add to Punk's character if they did it (right at least).  The major downside would be in situations like Sunday's PPV where Punk would have to wrestle twice in a show.  Given the injury bug that has bitten WWE lately, I wouldn't tempt fate like that.

Do you think Brock Lesnar’s post win promo from UFC 100 adds ammo to those that feel current wrestling promos are too scripted? That was better than any promo from his WWE days. Or, do you think the fact that he heeled the sponsor gives ammo to those that feel the performers need to be reined in?

I agree that he did a great heel promo and it definitely pointed out how over-scripting him in WWE worked against him (and I feel others as well).  I am a big fan of giving guys that can do a good promo bullet points to hit and then sending them out there to let them get through to the crowd.  I think that the WWE creative team goes way overboard in how they write everything that the talents say.  It doesn't let a lot of them show their personality or charisma.  I don't think Brock shooting on Bud Light showed anything other than he can still be a big dope at times.  There is no excuse for crapping on a sponsor like he did and frankly you shouldn't have to tell a wrestler or fighter not to be a moron.  Brock came off like a real clueless goof doing that.

What is the latest on the ex-WWE wrestler known as Muhammad Hassan?

Last I heard, Mark Copani was still trying to make it as an actor.  I wish him luck with that.

When Vince McMahon created the new ECW it seemed that WWE wants to bring back the old hardcore style of ECW but actually ECW is the best WWE's development territory and there isn't hardcore. Vince's idea was always entice the fans with a hardcore ECW and next, quietly, change ECW and turn it in a training camp?

The original plan was to let it be sort of like the old ECW for a few months, then turn it into a WWE style product.  My feeling was Vince thought he could get the old school ECW fans who had stopped watching to come back for the rebirth, then trick them into watching the WWE version.  He didn't realize that ECW fans are a lot smarter and more loyal than that.  So once he switched to a WWE style product, the ratings dropped.  After that, Vince just made it what it is now.  To me, it's another wasted opportunity.

What is the latest on Ultimate Warrior?

He's still special....very special.
