PWINSIDER Q & A: SHOULD TNA SPEND ON HULK HOGAN OR KENNEDY, BRING BACK CLASSIC PPVS, NASTY NICK IN THE RING, KENDRICK'S MISSING PUSH AND MORE

By Dave Scherer on 2009-07-15 10:00:00

I know WWE will not do it but could Starrcade, Halloween Havoc, Wrestle War, SuperClash, Heatwave, Wrestlepalooza and the myriad of other PPV names sell better than the ilk they've been spewing out? Could Spin the Wheel be a viable PPV?

With the exception of The Royal Rumble, WrestleMania and maybe SummerSlam, no other WWE PPV sells on the name alone.  It's a matter of what is booked for the show.  So pulling the old names out of mothballs won't sell any more shows than "Armageddon" or "Backlash" would.  At this point, all of the older promotions have all been dead for at least 8 years so it's not like the fans that followed ECW, WCW or the AWA are going to come running back if WWE changes the name of a PPV.  They need to book shows that entice people to want to buy them.  As for Spin The Wheel, I think if it were booked correctly, it could be a fun show.  That is a big if however.  If you don't entice people to buy it with good booking, they won't do so just to see a wheel go around.

What happened to Brian Kendrick’s search for the right tag team partner? Is this another example of WWE Creative forgetting a storyline right after they started it?

No, it's an example of dropping a program that they didn't feel like pushing anymore.  Kendrick got a nice push for a while but he has been put on the back burner.

Suppose for a second that you're running TNA. You only have the budget to bring in Hulk Hogan for a short run or Ken Kennedy for an extended contract. Who do you choose?

Hmmm, can I say neither?  Honestly, I don't want to see Hulkamania running wild in TNA but if the options are what you gave me, I would take him for a short run over Kennedy for a long one.  Kennedy just can't stay healthy and some top guys say he is clumsy to work with so signing him would be a major gamble for TNA.  On top of that, he never reached his potential in WWE and in his mid-thirties, with his history of injuries, I don't see it happening in TNA either.  At least with Hogan TNA would get some short term buzz out of bringing him in.

I was wondering what your opinions would be if Nick Hogan decided that he wants to follow in his father's footsteps and wants to wrestle, do you think he would have any success?

I have seen the guy from a few feet away and can tell you that he is small and kind of gangly.  He certainly doesn't have the look of a wrestler.  I have never seen any charisma out of him on the Hogan Knows Best show either.  When you combine those things with the fact that he would be coming in as Hulk Hogan's son, I think he would fail miserably, worse than David Flair or David Sammartino.

Do you think WWE will see the potential in Paul Burchill and ever push him?

They have certainly had the chance to look him over for a while now and haven't made the decision to do so.  I see some potential there but I don't know if WWE management does.  They surely haven't done him any favors so far with how he has been used.
