PWINSIDER Q & A: JERICHO'S PUSH, A NEW WAY OF DOING PROMOS, TNA BECOMING WWF, PROTECTING THE BUSINESS AND MORE

By Dave Scherer on 2008-12-15 10:00:00

Do you think it would be a good idea to have wrestlers who are not that good at promos wear an ear piece that the fans can't see and have others that are tell them what to say and they just repeat it?

Honestly, no I don't.  To me, if you can't carry your end of the bargain, you don't deserve to be out there doing promos.  Part of being a featured performer is being able to connect with the crowd.  If you need a Cyrano to do that, you aren't a top guy.

In the days of protecting the industry, did the wrestlers appear as their in- ring personas in their personal life, Like going to the grocery store and the like?

They protected the business when they were around the fans and at the venues.  George Steele didn't dress like The Animal when he was teaching school however.  It's better to say that they protected the business.  They weren't crazy!  Could you really see Abdullah The Butcher chasing people down the aisles of the supermarket with a fork in his hand?

I have noticed a fan that has been in the front row of a ton of events for like the past 20 years. He is always in a tank top and big glasses, is bi-racial (half black), and is always really enthusiastic. Do you have any info on this guy, like who he is, where he is from and how he is able to attend so many events in the front row for the past 20 years.

Nope, I don't but to be honest I don't pay much attention to the fans.  I know that there are some who go out of their way to get on TV, but I just think that is kind of wannabe behavior (I am not saying it's this guy, but my rule of thumb is when a fan gives himself a name or refers to himself in the third person, it's just goofy).  I feel that if you want to be on TV, learn to work and be a wrestler.  That's just me though.

Theoretically, since the WWE no longer owns the initials 'WWF', would it be possible for TNA to strike a deal with the World Wildlife Fund and use these initials if they ever decide to re-brand themselves or use it in a storyline? (ie. just calling themselves the 'WWF', since they obviously won't be able to use 'world wrestling federation'.)

I don't know all of the legalities of it but WWE still owns the rights to market WWF footage so I don't know if TNA would be able to do that anyway.  My hunch is that they wouldn't.  Honestly, I think it would be really, really lame if they did.  WWE hasn't been the WWF for almost a decade.  It's the past.  TNA needs to worry about the present and the future, not take a ride in the wayback machine.

Ok, my question is in regards to Chris Jericho's current character. I LOVE his promo's as of late, but it seems to me that they are booking him as a heel that works others to accomplish his dirty work. I realize that creative books Cena to look like Superman, and Jericho is simply using strategy, but it is reminding me of Edge's feuds with Taker and Batista where he couldn't get the job done on his own. Jericho is a GREAT worker and I guess my question is whether you think this is good booking for Jericho? Should they be booking him as a "weasel" heel, or a heel that can back up his own talk of his "legendary" status?

I see what you are saying and I agree that Jericho would be more credible overall if he backed up his words with his own actions but that just isn't how WWE does things, unfortunately.  They like their faces strong and (most of) their top heels as weasels, cheaters or both.
