WWE STAR, FORMER WCW WORLD CHAMPION RON SIMMONS COMMENTS ON INDUCTION INTO COLLEGE FOOTBALL HALL OF FAME

By Mike Johnson on 2008-12-09 16:10:53

WWE's Ron Simmons, who held the WCW World championship in 1992 and at the time was promoted as the first African-American World champion in professional wrestling will be inducted tonight into the College Football Hall of Fame during a dinner and induction ceremony in New York City.

Simmons, most known currently for muttering "Damn!" during WWE Raw cameo appearances, had a little more to say in regard to his induction, noting, "It really hasn't sunk in yet,.  This is a tremendous privilege and honor. I was recruited hard by all the Georgia schools and grew up in South Georgia, and they all told me I was going to an all-girls' school without much tradition at Florida State. We proved a lot of people wrong, and it was a fantastic experience playing for coach Bobby Bowden."

Bowden was inducted two years ago by the Hall.

Simmons' Florida State number # 50 was retired in a 1988 ceremony while he was working for Jim Crockett Promotions.

Many thanks to Angelo DiCarlo for all his help.
