PWINSIDER Q&A: WWE UNDER THE ACTING UNIONS, RON GARVIN'S NWA WORLD TITLE WIN, DWAYNE JOHNSON DROPPING THE ROCK MONIKER AND MORE

By Mike Johnson on 2008-11-30 10:27:29

As always great site, and like many other elite members it is probably the site I check most during the day. On to the questions; why did JCP make Ron Garvin the World Champ back in 1987? And besides him can you think of any other wrestlers who really shouldn't have had a world title reign? To me this reign didn't even make sense. Flair got the belt back 2 months later.

Ronnie Garvin’s NWA World championship win over Ric Flair was designed to set up the Starrcade ‘87 PPV main event. It was never meant to be a long-term reign for Garvin or an attempt to position him as the new centerpiece of the company.

I am a frequent viewer of this site and one of my favorite articles to read are the reviews of RAW, SMACKDOWN and ECW the day after the shows. The one thing I have noticed in the reviews is the amount of praise you give Finlay as a worker. I was curious to get your thoughts on Finlay's chances of being in the Hall of Fame someday. Also, what do you think the chances are the WWE gives him a run as world champion?

Unless there is a massive issue that causes Dave Finlay to fall out of favor with WWE management, he’s pretty much a shoe-in for a WWE Hall of Fame nod down the line. I don’t see WWE ever giving him a World championship win, unless they decide to give him a short run as sort of a lifetime achievement award, similar to Mick Foley or Chris Benoit’s wins.

With WWE moving to "entertainers" is it possible for the wrestlers to enter an actors/performers guild or an union of some sort? This could help fight the independent contractor status that seems to plague the WWE and provide some support for the lower tier wrestlers. If the NBA and NFL have a players association why can't wrestling?

Technically, they would fall under AFTRA, since they are recorded on tape like most TV series but the reality is WWE is probably the last major non-union entertainment entity on television and WWE management wouldn’t want to have to deal with the unions getting involved with squabbles or by falling in line with the edicts set by an outside organization. As far as why there isn’t a union, the same cycle always seems to happen - the wrestlers realize far too late in their lives that they would have benefited from the union but the younger, current generation doesn’t care because they are making big money.

After Gail Kim left TNA to eventually sign with WWE the womens division within TNA seems to have stalled. Slowed down. The division was once praised for its efforts in and out of the ring. So much so it led people to think that was the reason for WWE's women’s division to work much harder to compete with them. TNA used to have two women’s matches on every week on Impact! Not anymore. Do you think Gail Kim leaving has taken the heart out of their women’s division? Has TNA tinkered with the division to the point where its not as viable as it once was? Has TNA's Knockouts lost their way?

I think WWE signed Kim because they knew she could make them money in the right setting, because she was doing so for TNA. As far as the women’s division losing it’s way, part of that is due to Kim leaving but Scott D’Amore’s departure also hurts because he laid out a lot of the matches for the division as their agent and his fingerprints are no longer seen.

I noticed that Dwayne Johnson no longer uses the moniker The Rock in his appearance for the movie Race to Witch Mountain. Has he decided to drop The Rock? Was it WWE's idea or his own? Why the change besides the fact that Dwayne Johnson is his real name?

It was Johnson’s and he wants to be known as an actor, not a wrestler trying to act. He’s at the point in his career where the wrestling connection is more of an albatross than a plus. He doesn’t need the Rock name to be recognized.
