PWINSIDER Q & A: KILLING JERICHO'S CHARACTER, IS VINCE EMBARRASSED, JBL STILL WRESTLING, SANTINO'S TITLE RUN AND MORE

By Dave Scherer on 2008-11-05 10:00:00

Why did the WWE have Chris Jericho spend almost 5 months creating an amazing and ruthless heel character in his feud/storyline with Shawn Michaels that fans loved to hate only to bury him and his new character in a few short weeks in his feud with Batista? I think its a total waste and feel they have done to Jericho what they did to CM Punk with the Championship, book him as the underdog and invariably lose all credibility as Champion.

My hunch is that is was done due to the fact that TV ratings fell while Jericho was champion, but that is only a hunch.  I haven't heard the definitive reason why they took Jericho from being a different, interesting character that was a breath of fresh air to a retread type that we have seen many times before.  I agree with you, it was a waste of an interesting part of Raw but the company is very quick to overreact where certain aspects of the business are concerned (meanwhile ignoring other things that actually should be addressed).  And, I also agree that they have misbooked CM Punk too.

You get asked a lot of similar questions, and I appreciate you feel you should answer them because the person may not have visited the site before. Have you ever thought of adding a PWInsider FAQ and A? A link near the email inviting people to check out some frequent questions before emailing you a question could lighten your load and reduce the monotony.

It's a lot easier to delete questions that put a page like that together!  Plus, my hunch is that most of the people who ask the same questions over and over again aren't exactly the "seek out the answers" kind of folks.

Why do you suppose JBL still wrestles? I mean, he's in his 40s, he semi-retired because of his back once already, he's made a lot of money in the stock market (well, before this year at least), not to mention he's married to a woman who is equally or more financially successful. And while he's not the worst guy under contract by any means, he's also not really that viable for some long title run either, so why would he even want to bother with the pain and travel when he could be soaking in a Jacuzzi sipping Mai Tai's on a Texas Ranch until he's 90? I know I would!

I am with you, I would be living the good life too!  But, I can see why JBL feels differently.  According to everyone I have spoken to, he simply loves the business and loves to work.  He never wanted to go to the sidelines when his back acted up in the first place.  He loves everything about being a wrestler so he is back doing it for as long as he can.  I admire his commitment.

I am a fan of Santino Marella and "Santino's Casa" on wwe.com. Now since he shows off the Honk-o-meter weekly on both the webcast and Raw, do you see WWE having him run this gimmick all the way to Honky's record? I see WWE just dropping it altogether, like they do with many long term storylines.

Given that the IC Title hasn't meant anything in quite some time, along with the fact that they have three top titles now (if you count the ECW strap as one), I could definitely see this storyline continuing for a while.  It's not like they need the Championship for anything serious and the Santino storyline is fun, so why not?  His work is usually one of the highlights of the program and he doesn't need to actually wrestle to be effective so it makes sense to keep this going.

Would it be a fair assessment to say that Vince McMahon is somewhat (or even grossly) embarrassed that he's the owner of a wrestling company? He seems to do everything he can to make his company into everything BUT a wrestling promotion, and every chance he gets he attempts to venture outside the wrestling realm and duplicate his success he's had with WWE. Don't you think being the owner of the most successful and lucrative wrestling promotion in the history of the world (and being THE brain trust behind that) would be enough for him?

I don't think that would be fair to say.  I think the more accurate statement would be that he wants to do more in the entertainment field that just promote wrestling.  My take on it is that he doesn't like the traditional definition of wrestling, which is why he has taken it down Sports Entertainment Lane, but it also reflects the fact that he thinks he has a mind capable of more than just promoting wrestling bouts.   Me, I think he should be happy with what he has too, especially when you consider that his ventures outside of it has shown that as far as being an entertainment guru, he's a great wrestling promoter.
