PWINSIDER Q & A: WWE IN THE CURRENT ECONOMY, SHEIK CRAZINESS, CAGE MATCHES, RAW-ECW TALENT EXCHANGE AND MORE

By Dave Scherer on 2008-10-15 10:00:00

I've got only one question for you: Is there any chance to get a WWE TV Taping in Switzerland? We got a lot of house shows and they are always sold out. What for critics has WWE, to announce TV Tapings?

Sure, there is always a chance, I just don't know how good of one it is.  Switzerland isn't one of WWE's bigger foreign markets so I would tend to think the chances aren't very good of getting a TV taping.

What was the cause of Iron Sheik's longstanding beef with B. Brian Blair?

The cause is that the Sheik has been exhibiting nut behavior for a while now.  He must have some kind of beef with Blair dating back decades to when they worked together but I don't know what it is.  Trying to get a straight coherent answer out of Sheik is not the easiest thing in the world.  My best guess is that he didn't like him then and now he wants to "humble him anally".  Or, it's all schtick.  Who knows with Sheik.

What's the point of WWE having cage matches when they can be won via pinfall/submission? I can understand using it to solve a problem where the participants' past matches were affected by outside interference, but that's about it. One can make the argument of being able to use the cage itself as a weapon, but it'd be more practical to make a No DQ match, where actual weapons can be used. Even then, that doesn't stop weapons from being used in the cage matches, at times. They should at least go back to tried and true method of making them escape-only. Thoughts?

I have always thought that cage matches should have guys battle it out in a place where no one can get away and use the metal as a weapon, kind of like the UFC Octagon.  I don't think there should be any kind of DQs either.  Anything goes in my cage.  I agree that pinfalls shouldn't count, but if a guy wants to give up, I have no problem with that finish in a cage.  To me, the two ways to win should be to climb out over the top (not through a door) and touch the floor or make the other guy submit.  But, WWE doesn't really care what I think!

Isn't Teddy Long getting kinda screwed on this Raw/ECW talent exchange? I haven't seen one Raw wrestler on ECW.

Teddy is lucky to have the cherry job that he has!  He gets to hang out with Tiffany and play GM.  Don't cry for him!  To seriously answer the question, I get what you are saying but I think it makes much more sense to expose the ECW talent to the larger Raw audience than vice versa.  ECW is the clear third brand and the ratings won't tick up significantly no matter who is on the show.  They have found that out already.  They have decided to move forward by making it a developmental brand with a small number of good talents.  It's working out well for them.

This may not be your area of expertise, but since the current financial crisis could affect everything, I wonder what you guys think about any potential affects on the WWE. I only ask because of an article on your site where the WWE addressed it to its stockholders.

WWE is fine right now.  They still have a vast war chest of cash from their IPO and they generate a lot of revenue, certainly enough to remain in the black and keep things rolling.  Since they are not leverage financially, they will be fine.
