PWINSIDER Q&A: IRON SHEIK VS. BRIAN BLAIR, TOMKO, WWE'S ROSTER, 'THE WRESTLER' AND MORE

By Mike Johnson on 2008-10-14 10:02:37

What was the cause of Iron Sheik's longstanding beef with B. Brian Blair?

No one really seems to know for sure (and who knows if there even really is one) but Sheik went off on Blair during a shoot interview using homophobic terms and saying he wanted to break his back and make Blair humble, things that have been absorbed into the wrestling lexicon ever since.  Blair appeared at the Iron Sheik Roast over the weekend, which led to Sheik slapping him, but again, who knows if that was a work.

For those interested, here is the clip that started the mayhem:

Does WWE have a set amount of wrestlers that they keep on the roster? Has it changed much from the 80s?90s?early 2000s? With business down, does WWE have less worked on the roster, and now with the economy in the toilet, do you see more guys getting cut.

I don't believe there is a set quota and the only way more talent will be cut is if the company (read: Vince McMahon) decrees that they aren't worth keeping around.

I heard Tomko was at the recent FCW tapings from a Florida indy board. Is a WWE return in the works? Perhaps he was just visiting?

Tomko was at the Florida Championship Wrestling taping 2 weeks back.  He was just visiting as he lives in Jacksonville I believe, but anytime a "name" talent is visiting a WWE-related event, one has to think there's a possibility of their joining the roster.  I haven't heard anything concrete.

I just thought I would ask, what do you think the likelihood of Johnny Devine going to WWE is? I could really see him working with guys like Bourne and Morrison.   I don't know if this is a Q and A quality question, but I was just wondering.

Personally, I don't see it.  I think Devine is a guy who shows flashes of really great work at times but has never really done so on a consistent basis.  I do think the potential is there, so my guess is if he ever gets a WWE gig, he'd be assigned to FCW to re-tool his work.  Whether a veteran like he would be willing to subject himself to that, I can't tell you.

When is the Wrestler coming out on DVD?

The film will be released theatrically via limited release (probably just major markets like New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, etc.) with a larger release if it shows signs of doing well commercially.  There's no word on a DVD release yet.  As I discussed yesterday in the PWInsider.com Elite section with my audio, the performances of the three leads (Mickey Rourke, Marisa Tomei and Evan Rachel Wood) are phenomenal.
