PWINSIDER Q&A: RAW'S TERRIBLE MAIN EVENT FINISHES AND WHO IS TO BLAME, TNA'S LIVE IMPACT, THE LATEST STRING OF UNDERCARD TALENTS BROUGHT UP & MORE

By Mike Johnson on 2008-09-30 09:34:11

Why in the world does WWE keep giving us such awful finishes on Raw?  They don't make anyone want to order the PPVs.  I was going to order No Mercy but the last few weeks of endings just completely ruined my interest in the show.  I'd rather just wait and see if the Ladder Match is great and buy a DVD for $15 at KMart.

Unfortunately, a big part of the problem is that creative is writing for what Vince McMahon wants, not what is always best for the audience.  When you are booking for an audience of one, and one who's mind changes rapidly, it's never an easy job.  I really feel for those working in the creative process because it's a thankless job.  If the show is good, you are worried about keeping it that way.  If the show is bad, you are worried about your job.  So, yeah, the recent Raw main events have sucked, but if you have to point the blame, point it at Vince and not those trying to make his happy.  They are simply trying to meet their quota, so to speak, just like the rest of us.

Also, why in the world is JBL bringing up the Wall Street Crisis?  I want to watch wrestling to escape my problems, not be reminded of my 401K going to crap.

I sort of agree with you there, but given his character, it's kind of a given they are going to bring it up.  I'd personally prefer they focus more on escapist fantasy as well, but that's just me.

Why did WWE bring up Scotty Goldman and the other recent names if they are just going to be enhancement?  It seems to me that with the exception of Goldman's goofy antics, none of these guys have a chance and they are going right to the release line.  Why bring them up if there is nothing for them?

I do agree that for some of them, there isn't much of an upside, but when you've been in the developmental system for some time, you have to take what they are giving you.  If you look at a push like a promotion in your job, you have to just work hard and hope your efforts are noticed.  Still, my personal feeling is that you should have a set idea for a talent when you bring them in or else it's a wasted financial investment on the company's part and a wasted time effort on the talent's part - but that's just my view on the outside looking in.

Does WWE realize how good the current ECW product is and do you think it'll ever be that good on Raw and Smackdown?

I think part of the reason the product on ECW is so good is that so much attention goes to the other brands that ECW just sort of falls in between the cracks and is allowed to rely on wrestling and athletics.  I also think that the wrestling on the other brands is underrated and there's usually a few good matches on every show, but standards have been pushed so high that a lot of the wrestling is overlooked by die-hard fans.

Why is TNA doing a live Impact again?

It's a SpikeTV idea and when your promotional partner wants you to work with them, you do.  So, TNA is.
