LOOKING AT A "THIS IS OUR LAST NIGHT AT 10 P.M." EDITION OF ECW ON SCI FI

By Dave Scherer on 2008-09-24 15:25:56

This week's edition of ECW on Sci Fi was a lot like Raw from Monday.  It was an OK show that saw some decent wrestling and booking I didn't really like.

For instance, we had a women's match, but no appearance from the ECW Champion.  And, unlike on Raw or Smackdown, the challenger only got a few minutes to speak.  That sure seemed like a case of skewed priorities to me.

Then, two of my favorite guys on the brand were pitted against each other so that they could get splashed by Ricky Ortiz, rather than have Evan Bourne team up with the green fella and make the match better.  I guess they will do that next week but I really didn't like that Evan Bourne missed this week's show, I would guess selling the beating from Kane that he got on Monday (in another match I wish had never happened).

The other booking bit that made me scratch my head was that they seem to be redoing the whole Colin Delaney bit with Chase Stevens, oblivious to the fact that it didn't work the first time.  Been there, seen that.  Throw in the fact that Miz and Morrison wasn't as good as I hoped it would be and it led to a pretty blah show.  Again, it wasn't bad but it wasn't good either.

The Angles:

  • The opening segment was a mixture of emotions for me.  On the one hand, it set up a Miz vs. John Morrison match, which I figured would be good.  The potential problem was that the winner had to face Epstein Ortiz.  That could get dicey.  The segment itself was fine.  It was nice to see a GM outsmart the heels for once.
  • Mark Henry's promo was great, as usual.  I love the guy.  With that said, couldn't they gave him more than a minute?  Hell, Randy Orton stands in the ring smirking before he speaks for longer than that.  Jeez.  And, where the hell was Matt Hardy?  I mean, he is the champ right?  And he and Henry are having the top ECW match at the PPV right?
  • Jack Swagger sure did trash Tommy Dreamer didn't he?  Sure, everyone does, but it was still a cool smackdown. Now, it appears that Chase Stevens will play the role of the new loser who gets aligned with Dreamer, goes nowhere and then gets released in a few months.  Lucky you Chase!
  • I am guessing that Ricky Ortiz splashed Miz and Morrison to set up a match where he teams with Bourne against the former champs.  I still don't know if Ortiz has it.  He just comes across as goofy to me, and in it a Santino Marella kind of way either.

The Matches:

  • Finlay got a solid, stiff win over Bam Neely.  I was kind of surprised to see Bam in this match since he rarely but it was pretty much an enhancement win for Finlay and Bam fits that role to a T.
  • I kind of cringed when Maryse came out but she did a decent job in her match against Michelle McCool.  Considering how new she is in the ring, that is a positive.
  • Mike Knox got to beat up Chase Stevens in a squash match.  Total squash.
  • I was disappointed in the main event.  I was hoping that Miz and Morrison will tear it up like they usually do but the match was kind of slow and ordinary.  Hey, everyone can have an off day.

What To Make Sure And Watch If You DVR'd The Show:

  • Like I said above, it was an OK show.  Watch, or don't watch, accordingly.

Rhetorical And Unanswered Questions:

  • How many people freaked out when they heard JR calling ECW?
  • Was Miz channeling creative's philosophy when he said that even though he lost the match, he really won because he dominated it?
  • How great was John Morrison mocking Braden Walker getting released?
  • Why wouldn't Evan Bourne be at his own TV show?
  • Isn't that his job?
  • When WWE had Bourne "miss TV" just because he got pinned by Kane, was anyone else concerned that creative has noticed that they have a show on Tuesday nights and they are now going to start mucking it up with their dopey approach to the business?
  • Shouldn't WWE be a little less obvious about playing a huge audience reaction for Ricky Ortiz when they are panning a crowd that is obviously not cheering?
  • If you were Miz or Morrison, wouldn't you just throw the match so you didn't have to wrestle Ortiz?
  • Uh, why did Teddy tell Ortiz he had a big "challenge" ahead when he was going to get to wrestle a guy who already worked a match?
  • Shouldn't he have actually said, "I gave you a softball, you better knock it out of the park"?
  • Couldn't Teddy get sued for talking about how hot Tiffany is?
  • And, did Teddy really ask Ortiz if it was appropriate to pull our his rally towel after he had just told Tiff that she looked hot?
  • Why should we be concerned with "not hearing from Chavo since last Friday night" when this is was ECW and Smackdown doesn't air for a few days?
  • Damn, ain't Finlay stiff?
  • Does it creep anyone else out to see little kids running around with Hornswoggle?
  • Is Maryse trying to look like a vampire or what?
  • When Striker talked about "bringing the divas to ECW", did he forget that up until the draft, they were  on the show every week?
  • So Maryse is the one they think they should have in a title program with Michelle McTaker?
  • Really?
  • Wasn't Mark Henry right about how he got jobbed out of losing the title?
  • Did you notice that when Henry said "in two weeks at the PPV" he was actually dead on since the show was taped on a Sunday?
  • Doesn't Tommy Dreamer need to work on his running a little bit?
  • Wasn't it funny to watch the fans not react to Ricky Ortiz when he came out for his non-match?
  • Where the hell was Matt Hardy anyway?
  • Was he hanging out somewhere with Evan Bourne when he should have been at work?
