PWINSIDER Q & A: VINCE YELLING BACKSTAGE, PPV BONUSES, RHODES, ANGLE BACK IN THE OLYMPICS AND MORE

By Dave Scherer on 2008-09-10 10:00:00

Has Vince McMahon always been yelling into the announcers headsets during broadcasts? Even guys like Monsoon, Ventura, Heenan? You'd think he'd start to trust them at some point, especially when a guy has been there for years like Ross and Lawler.

Things really changed when they started doing live TV.  Back in the days of taped syndicated broadcasts, it wasn't an issue because things weren't live and also because they delivered a different kind of product back then.  Since they went to the current version of product, whenever Vince isn't an on-air he is definitely "producing" in the headsets.  He is very specific in what he wants the announcers to say and if they don't do it, he tells them about it.  Being an announcer is a hard job to do.

I just read your response to a Q&A regarding pay scales for wrestlers at PPVs. My question is do the bosses decide how much a worker receives before or after their performance? They would essentially know how much involvement a wrestler would have prior to the PPV, so they can judge from there. But if the pay is based on their performance or appearance after, then a boss can, say, give them more or less money. An example would be if Shawn Michaels and Jericho were suppose to get "x" amount, but their performance was a blow away, the bosses would give them more. Just curious.

Only WWE management knows for sure what the formula is.  They have told guys in the past that the formula is based off of the talents' spot on the card and the revenue that the show draws.  Beyond that, it's purely at WWE management's discretion.

I could swear when I first began seeing, and hearing, Cody Rhodes, that he spoke fine. All of a sudden, he seems to be affecting a lisp, just like his old man; why is he doing that?

I remember him having that when he debuted.  I have not noticed a change.

Vickie Guerrero & Edge; I am not surprised that no one came out to help her, but where was Chavo, Bam, or the Edgeheads? And what I really don't get is if she is so terrified of him, why doesn't she just fire him?? She is, after all, the GM! She got rid of UT; why not fire Edge? Not firing him or at least getting protection makes this whole thing really stupid to me. And what's with all the screaming she is doing? She always put on before that she was a strong, confident woman; this does not jibe at all.

That is all part of the poetic license that WWE thinks we need to give them in doing their product.  With much of what they are doing, we have to check logic at the door.  Expecting things to make sense in WWE can be hazardous to your mental health.

Is Kurt Angle ever going to train for another Olympics? That would be awesome if he can take another gold medal home.

I highly, highly doubt it.  He's old (he would be 43 in 2012).  He's got issues with his body.  And, there isn't much money in it, certainly not compared to what they make in WWE.  If he were going to do anything like that it would be to go into Mixed Martial Arts since that is where the money is.  Since he has only talked about that but never done it, I think it will probably never happen.
