PWINSIDER Q&A: WOMEN WRESTLING IN NEW YORK, LA PARKA, JOHN CENA AND MORE

By Buck Woodward on 2008-08-30 10:00:00

I remember reading once where women wrestlers were not allowed to wrestle in New York until sometime in the 70's. Is this true and, if so, why?

Indeed, it is true.  Chalk it up to another dumb State Athletic Commission rule that was antiquated and needed to be taken off the books in New York (like the one banning masked wrestlers).  When it was finally removed, The Fabulous Moolah defeated Vickie Williams in the first Women's match ever in Madison Square Garden on July 1, 1972.

It was mentioned that the WWE once toured the country of India. Were the wrestlers, male and female, ever instructed how to conduct themselves over there with what happened to the actor Richard Gere when he hugged the Bollyhood actress with such passion leading for both individuals to be arrested?

Whenever WWE goes overseas to a country that has different cultural attitudes and laws, the wrestlers are told of things to avoid.  One specific example I can recall was one country (I can't recall the name off the top of my head) that had very strict laws regarding spitting.  The wrestlers were told not to spit within view of the fans, as public spitting was a criminal offense in the country and you could be arrested for it.

Can you tell me if there is a place where you can buy dvd copies of classic AWA or NWA TV tapings?

Not legally.  WWE now owns all classic AWA and NWA (Crockett, Georgia, Florida) footage, and anyone else selling it is violating WWE's copyrights and is opening themselves up to legal action.

Are there Urban Myths about multiple La Parkas similar to Kane, Undertaker, and Ultimate Warrior?

No urban myths, it is pretty well known that there are two different La Parkas (LA Park is the original) working the gimmick in Mexico.

Wasn't John Cena on Tough Enough as a contestant?  I could have sworn I saw him on a show training once before he became a WWE star.

I think you have your shows mixed up.  Cena, while working California independents under his original ring name Prototype appeared in a documentary on the UPW Wrestling school and promotion on The Learning Channel.  He wasn't on Tough Enough.
