PWINSIDER Q&A: VENTURA & SAITO, AJ STYLES, MICK FOLEY AND MORE

By Buck Woodward on 2008-08-22 10:00:00

I was just reading on Wikipedia that in 1990 when Masa Saito formed a tag team with Jesse Ventura called the Far East-West Connection. I know Jesse Left the WWE in 1988 and didn't go to WCW until several years later as a commentator, so did Jesse put back on his wrestling boots and tag with Saito or did some guy just put it up on Wikipedia just to BS?

Jesse Ventura and Masa Saito teamed in the AWA, briefly, using that moniker, but it was in the early 80's, not 1990.

My question is about AJ Styles. What do you think the future holds for him in TNA? I am a huge AJ Styles fan and have always enjoyed his work in the company, if TNA were to have a Hall of Fame of their own, certainly his name would be one of the first to be inducted. With that said, he is also one of the most accomplished names in the company as far as championships are concerned and has won every single title multiple times. I know he has stated that he would not consider WWE as an option, but do you see him staying with TNA until his retirement? Do you see a possible ROH return in the future? Thank you for your time.

I think AJ Styles will continue to be a big star for TNA, always near the top of the cards, and will probably end up with another World Title reign at some point.  Honestly, the only way I see him leaving TNA is if WWE financially made an offer he couldn't refuse, and I don't see that happening, as WWE has never paid top dollar for lighter weight talent to come in to the company.  As for ROH, I suppose it is possible, since TNA talent can work some ROH events now, but I imagine it would only be a one-shot type situation.

So Mick Foley is going to go to TNA. Do you think this is really going to help them? I don't want to be hard on him, but I don't think Mick can change TNA.

First of all, it is not set in stone that Foley will be going to TNA when his WWE contract expires.  If Foley goes there, I think he can help the company, but I don't see his mere presence causing any kind of huge ratings spike.

Given the apparent return of the "Soviet Empire" with what's going on in Europe lately, knowing how Vince McMahon usually takes advantage of world issues, does this bode well for the character of Vladimir Koslov? As long as the conflict in Europe continues, do you expect Vladimir to be given a monster heel push ?

It certainly is possible, but I think WWE would probably be barking up the wrong tree, as the "evil commie" gimmick went out of style in the late 80's.  Besides, I wouldn't call Vladimir's domination of undercard performers as "monster" push just yet.

I have just watched SummerSlam and am very disappointed in this PPV. As I now only watch the big 4 and the monthly TNA due to the WWE product. My question is instead of all these bogus finishes what do you think of bringing back time limit matches? I remember 10 minute, 15 minute, 20 minute and 1 hour time limit. I would rather see a draw than a dq finish. Also, what's up with all the build to matches during the PPV? We have already spent our money to buy the PPV why do we need to see what happened over the last 3 and 4 weeks on RAW and Smackdown and ECW? I would have much rather see Jeff and MVP go to a 15 minute draw and have Sheldon attack Jeff after the bell. I would definitely liked to see Matt and Mark go for more than 10 seconds. The last half of the PPV was good but not worth 40 dollars to this 59 year old fan.

I would love to see them bring back time limits, for no other reason than it would give WWE another option for finishes.  Having 10 and 15 minute time limits would allow them to occasionally have undercard matches "come down to the wire" and WWE can use the draw to keep both performers strong.  As for the match hype, I can't blame WWE for including the video packages, since it allows fans who may have missed a show to "catch up" on things they have missed.  I don't feel every match needs one though.
