I've been watching the Monday night wars on 24/7 since I got cable back in May, and my question pertains to the Nitros. I've watched about two months of Nitro's and while Chris Benoit hasn't been edited out, he appears with the Horsemen regularly, I have yet to see a Benoit match, have they been editing out his matches... or am I just on something? It's a shame if they have been editing out his matches. If I may, I'd also like to ask a part two. Was Sting injured or in the middle of a contract dispute when he started to do the crow gimmick or did somebody in WCW think it was a good idea to pay one of its top performers to not work for close to a year and a half?
WWE has indeed been editing out Chris Benoit matches and segments that focus directly on Benoit. I don't blame WWE for wanting to distance themselves from Benoit, otherwise it might invite claims that they are trying to "cash in" on the controversy. As for Sting, yes, WCW did feel it made more sense for him to not wrestle on TV in order to keep an air of mystery around his character and build towards the inevitable match with Hulk Hogan. He did wrestle on house shows during that period at various points, usually against The Giant.
I want to apologize for bringing this up to those who've erased it from their memory. But of the all time dumbest angles or storylines you have ever suffered through.. where does, "Goldberg isn't following the script as it was written for him" rank amongst the worst? Yeah Katie Vick is up there but WCW was trying to be serious. I vaguely remember Dave Scherer comparing it to the actor playing Darth Vader unmasking and explaining how he felt about the Galactic Empire..during Star Wars.
The "this isn't part of the show" bit was a ridiculously overused booking crutch during the Vince Russo era of WCW. Basically, the announcers and everyone would "break character" in an attempt to get over how serious the situation was. Usually all they did was make a mockery of their own show. As more than a few people have pointed out, if you tell the audience "this segment is real, you should care about it" then you are also saying "everything else is fake, you shouldn't care about that stuff".
Looking back at when Sting came into TNA and started going after Jeff Jarrett, I remember in a promo that he did he referred to Jarrett as a cancer in TNA, Did he know that Jarrett's wife was sick and had been suffering from cancer? I don't think he would say anything like that if he had known, and if he didn't know how long after he found out would he have apologized to Jeff?
I can't imagine that Sting didn't know, but you also have to realize he was told to call Jeff that by TNA Creative, which is headed up by Jeff himself. Obviously, Jarrett was okay with using the word in that context.
Survivor Series 2005 had a Raw vs. Smackdown match. Eddie Guerrero was supposed to be on the Smackdown team but sadly died before the event happened. Randy Orton took his place. Orton won the match for Smackdown but after the match Undertaker returned. If Eddie hadn't died, how would they have brought Undertaker back, seeing Undertaker was after Orton?
I don't recall if there were any firm plans for Undertaker's return angle at that point, but obviously it would have been to get back at Orton.
I was recently watching the Monday Night Wars on WWE 24/7, and noticed that The Patriot's entrance music is the same entrance music that was used for Kurt Angle. Did they re-use The Patriot's music for Angle, or are they re-using the music for The Patriot due to availability/licensing issues?
They did reuse the same music. I believe it was a generic "patriotic sounding" piece that WWE's composer Jim Johnston came up with.
