PWINSIDER Q&A: GOLDUST, TOMKO, WWE CLASSICS, SANTINO MARELLA AND MORE

By Buck Woodward on 2008-08-01 10:00:00

The return of D-Lo Brown to the WWE has got me to thinking about the thing that, unfortunately, I think he's best known for: the night Darren Drozdov was paralyzed in the ring. What was the plan for Droz in the company before the accident, and more importantly how is he doing now?

Honestly, there were no big plans for Droz at the time of the accident.  He was a mid-card performer, young, and his career path was still largely uncertain.  Depending on how he improved in the ring and at giving promos, he might have been a star.  However, he might also have ended up another wrestler with an impressive physique that never went anywhere in the company.  Droz, last I heard, was still confined to a wheelchair and living life as best he can. I do recall hearing about him attending a college football game last year, where he was named honorary captain for his old school from Maryland.

Ok so I saw that Tomko, and Dustin Rhodes are done with TNA (which is good especially since I thought Black Reign was a stupid character, yes even worse than Goldust) do you see them returning to WWE, perhaps Dustin teaming with Bob Holly and doing a brother vs. brother set up against Cody, or both of them perhaps going to PWF to work with Dusty in the developmental area?

Dustin Rhodes has been brought back by WWE before, and it certainly is possible it could happen again.  Obviously, he is on good terms with the company, since he was involved in inducting his father into the Hall Of Fame two years ago, while still working for TNA.  His father is on the creative team, his half-brother is on the Raw roster, and Vince McMahon supposedly likes the Goldust character, so another run in WWE may not be out of the realm of possibility.  As for Tomko, I think WWE should sign him asap.  He has the look Vince always liked, but he has improved leaps and bounds in every category since leaving WWE a few years ago.  He could be a major star for WWE if used properly.

Today is Thursday and I have just watched the best wrestling show during the week. The WWF/E classics on MSG. Don't you think this should be mandatory watching for all the new wrestlers where they can learn how to tell a story in the ring and how to give a promo. This is what made me love wrestling in the first place. I am 59 years old suspend reality on every show I watch because I watch it for what it is. A male soap opera. I think Christian, Edge, Angle and a few others deliver the best promos in the business and tell a good and/or great story in the ring. Your thoughts.

I absolutely think wrestlers should be assigned "homework" in developmental where they watch classic footage to learn from.  However, I think it is also important for them to watch a variety of footage, and be shown what to incorporate into their own matches for today's audience.  With all due respect, a 30-minute match based around headlocks and armbars from 1965 is not going to help a wrestler in 2008 when it comes to technique.  But, if they're told to study the selling of a move in that match, or the facial expressions, and how to incorporate that into what they do now, then it is helpful.  A big part of wrestling is the "male soap opera" aspect, and guys like Edge have it down to a science.

As I watch Santino Marella, I can't help but thinking that the WWE is completely missing the boat with him. It seems to me that they should give him the Intercontinental Title, and let him play the same role the Honky Tonk Man did back in the late 80's. Have him hold onto the belt for a long time, and he would generate so much heat that it would make the belt important again. And I'd just love to hear him give promos, like, "I am the greatest of all the champions of the intercontinent!"

I don't think they are missing the boat on Santino at all.  They are giving him plenty of TV time to entertain with his comedic style, and down the road, I certainly can see him winning the Intercontinental belt again and incorporating it into his act.  Santino's got a long career ahead of him, so there's plenty of time to have him work through different storylines.

I'm a big fan of TNA's Knockouts division. Do you think it would be profitable for them to start releasing dvds the way Shimmer does? They can still have the girls work on Impact and on pay per view but to progress story lines they can show clips of matches from the DVDs on Impact. But to see the full show and matches you have to purchase the DVD. I think this would work much better than starting a knockouts only TV show because history has shown that women's wrestling on TV doesn't last long.

I don't see that happening.  TNA is still working on getting their PPV events out on DVD in a more timely manner, I don't see them doing a series of women's DVDs to get storylines over.  I think it makes more sense for TNA to continue to regularly feature the Knockouts and their storylines on Impact, and do the occasional Knockouts DVD release.
