IWA Mid-South Wrestling promoted two of their marquee events of the year over the weekend in Indiana, the two-day King of the Death Match tournament, which was won by Devon Moore and the Queen of the Death Match tournament, won by Rebecca Payne. I've heard that the tournaments were great for the blood and guts over the top ultraviolence aspect with names like Ian Rotten, Danny Havoc, Nick Gage, and Madman Pondo appearing for the male tournament and Mickie Knuckles and Texas' Rachel Summerlyn working the female tournament. Both events be released on DVD by www.smartmarkvideo.com. If anyone attended the events and wants to send along a live report, please feel free.
One of the major stories coming out of the IWA Death Match weekend weekend was a beating suffered by North Carolina independent wrestler Mike Levy, who was booked into the female Death Match tournament as a substitute, similar to Canadian wrestler Sexxy Eddy a few years back. www.IndyWrestlingNews.com reported, "During the match Knuckles and Levy began to exchange shots that increasingly became stiffer. Levy eventually gave Knuckles a head butt between the eyes that gave her what was described to me as a bruise/bump the size of a golfball and the situation quickly deteriorated from there. Eventually the match ended with Knuckles winning, however that was not the end of the incident. After the match several members of the IWA Mid-South roster entered the ring and began assaulting Levy in what was described to me as a "gang style beating" that included weapons that were in the ring for the match. Even Ian Rotten's pre-teen son got involved in the melee. The beating was described to me by someone as "the worst beating they've ever seen" which covers a lot of ground considering some of the things they've seen."
IWA promoter Ian Rotten later responded to the reports of the beating on the IWA website, writing, "If you want the real story, buy the DVD. The kid got an ass whipping for what I, and many others, feel was all the right reasons. He did not go to the hospital. As a matter of fact, he came back after getting cleaned up to watch the rest of the show. He was told he would be brought back and was grateful for that so I guess he could not be too bad off. I promise, he's face does not look anywhere near as bad as Mickie's does these morning. The kid was not beat up as people are putting it. If he was beat up by the wrestlers who were out there, he be lying in a hospital bed right now. End of story!"
Jazz, Rodney Mack, former Global Wrestling Federation personality Rod Price and Kevin Northcutt will be appearing this Saturday 6/28 at the Oldskool Wrestling Entertainment show in Westwego, Louisiana. Terry Funk appeared on the 6/21 AAW event in Berwyn, IL doing a segment where he came out as a surprise and put over the fans. Jimmy Jacobs and Ryan Boz came out and got in Funk's face, setting up Funk slapping Jacobs. Later on, Funk interfered in a scheduled three-way bout where Jacobs was defending his AAW Heritage belt, causing him to lose to Krotch, who then eliminated Arik Cannon (seen briefly on WSX on MTV and an IWA Mid-South regular) for the belt. Funk was making an appearance at another event in the area. Tyler Black defeated Marek Brave in a Stairway to Hell match. Jerry Lynn, who earlier on the card defeated Eric Priest to retain the AAW title, will face Black in the main event of the promotion's 7/12 return.
Former WWE Tag Team champion Scott "2 Hotty" Taylor, who may be one of the nicest people you can ever hope to meet in life, has opened an official website at http://www.thewormsworld.com/.
After 15 years of hosting professional wrestling, Philadelphia's Viking Hall (the former ECW Arena) will begin promoting their own live wrestling cards on 7/20 under the "Velocity Pro Wrestling" moniker. Viking Hall's owner Roger decided he wanted to take over the old Pro Wrestling Unplugged monthly events date when Tod Gordon retired from promoting. Drake Younger defeated Trent Acid in the main event of the 6/21 CZW event at Kashmir's Gentleman's Club in Vineland, NJ. Z-Barr, who was one hell of an annoying heel in the Stevie Richards vein several years ago here, returned in a loss in DJ Hyde. Others on the show included Ruckus, my favorite CZW tag team of Cloudy & Cheech, Sonjay Dutt and Danny Demanto.
Former ECW star "Pay Your Bills" Tommy Cairo ran Egg Harbor Township, NJ (in the Jersey Shore area) on Saturday evening with his Force-1 Wrestling promotion. Former ECW star Danny Doring defeated Danny "Inferno" Giomondo in the main event. Others appearing included Judas Young, the Rockin' Rebel and Ricky Reyes.
