AFTERNOON THOUGHTS: THE FANSLAM PHOENIX RISES AGAIN

By Mike Johnson on 2008-06-20 15:53:55

Every so often, Tommy Fierro pops back into the professional wrestling world with one of his Fanslam conventions.  This Saturday is one of those times.  Like a Phoenix, Fierro returns when you least expect it, but when he does, he does so with a vengeance.

Fierro, who admitted when I interviewed him last week for the PWInsider.com Elite section, that he's trying to make up for past cancellations by packing tomorrow's event with a ton of special events, has quite the calendar of events and guests for tomorrow.  He's also aggressively advertised locally as well as all over the Internet.

It's a different world than when Fierro, in 2003, re-energized the convention scene out of nowhere with an event that was so packed, it was nearly impossible to negotiate your way around the Holiday Inn in Totowa, NJ. There are a number of other conventions that have promoted regularly and successfully during his hiatus from promoting.

So, with this latest event, Fierro has tried to think outside the box.  Instead of relying on the old reliable signing and photo sessions, he's set up a number of events that almost sound like a wrestling summercamp day - a Worm contest judged by Scott "Too Hot" Taylor, JJ Dillon having lunch with the winner of a "Best Booker" contest, a Wrestling Jeopardy contest presided over by former WWF announcer Kevin Kelly, wrestling karaoke and more.

The convention almost doubles as a reunion of former WWF/E stars, featuring Daivari,  Tomko, Bill DeMott, Al Snow, Nick "Eugene" Dinsmore, Kevin Kelly, Headshrinker Samu, Scotty "2 Hotty" Taylor, plus ECW Original Axl Rotten, legendary manager JJ Dillon and even John Cena Sr. Q&A Sessions with Tomko and DeMott and Snow are also scheduled.

Beyond main guests being brought in by Fierro, other personalities who will populate the vendor's room include TNA Knockout champ Awesome Kong, Howard Finkel, Rhino, Angelina Love, The ECW Zombie, Danny Giomondo, Crowbar, Angelina Love, Missy Hyatt, Nicole Bass, Jerry Jarrett, the former WCW Gorgeous George, Fabulous Freebird Buddy Roberts, and Balls Mahoney.

Tomorrow, the Star Wars cantina has nothing on Totowa, NJ.

So, the next chapter of the wrestling convention craze will be written tomorrow.  With the exception of a select few promoters, there have been a number of horror stories in regard to conventions in the last two years.  Tomorrow, Fierro jumps back in the pool, hoping to add a comeback to his resume.
