PWINSIDER Q & A: ROCK RETURN, NWO, PIPER-FLAIR, WHAT TNA NEEDS TO DO TO EXCEL AND MORE

By Dave Scherer on 2008-05-19 10:00:00

Did Bischoff borrow the NWO from Japan or the WCCW and Memphis feud that went on when WCCW ended?

He is on the record as saying he got it after he saw the concept at a New Japan show that he attended while working with WCW.  He was impressed with how much heat it got there and he made it happen here in the US.

Why doesn't the Piper, Flair feud of the early 80's get any consideration of great feuds?

I think to people who are aware of it, it does.  The problem lies that it took place regionally, not on national TV, so a lot of newer fans never got to see it.  When things don't happen on the national stage, fewer people will know about it.  I think more than anything it was hurt by the fact that it happened so long ago and its exposure was minimal.

Ok so I just watched the most powerful families in wrestling DVD set, the first disc was awesome but what happened on the second? I was really expecting something at least on the Armstrongs and a few others at least what gives?

With all due respects to the Armstrongs, while I respect their contribution to the business, I don't exactly see them as a "powerful" family.  That distinction is saved for The McMahons, Von Erichs, etc.

Do you think maybe The Rock will make an appearance at Wrestlemania?

At this point, no I don't.  He has done a good job lately of distancing himself from wrestling, which has been a conscious choice of his.  Plus, he was at the Hall of Fame this past year and chose to not appear on Mania so I think that says it all.  He was in the perfect position to show up and Mania and chose not to.  I think that makes very clear where his priorities lie.

How can TNA be taken seriously when they continue doing awful storyline and gimmick things. They had something somewhat comical in the Jay Lethal/Macho Man thing. Now they got a Stone Cold rip-off, a Scott Steiner rip-off, and even a Hurricane rip-off. It just all comes across as super small time. And on top of that, we get the never ending garbage between Kip and BG James. No one has cared about if they are together or if they aren't. TNA has incredible potential, but they are so concerned with WWE that they don't do what only they can do. Your thoughts?

Obviously, you are overstating it.  TNA does 1.0 cable ratings, and in today's environment that is a solid number.  So, they have to be taken seriously.  With that said, I do agree with you that they try to be too much like WWE.  I think their biggest strength is in their roster of workers.  They should place more emphasis on wrestling, have more in-ring based storylines and then should be how different they can be.  I believe that there are a lot of potential wrestling fans out there who would tune in to an alternative product.  TNA is in the perfect position to give it to them.  I think as long as they do a WWE-like product they will always be looked at as secondary brand.
