PWINSIDER Q & A: KOTR, THE DRAFT, SID IN TNA, THE GORILLA POSITION AND MORE

By Dave Scherer on 2008-04-21 10:00:00

Why didn't WWE use the King of the Ring on an upcoming "Saturday Night's Main Event" to help bring back some prestige to those specials. ESPECIALLY considering they could use the three hour show for the Draft?

WWE has to get ratings up on Raw before they even consider what goes on, if anything, in NBC.  Raw is their bread and butter and with sagging ratings, it was a great call to do the KOTR in the three hour slot.  In theory, it should get the fans tuned in from the start, which is always a problem when they have the extra hour.  They need to get the Raw numbers up because a 3.2 is just not getting the job done.  NBC is an afterthought at this point.  They realize now that SNME's time has come and gone due to so much first run product airing in today's market.  Back in the old days, WWF TV was mostly squash matches so SNME's mattered because they had better match-ups.  That is no longer the case today.

Do you think there is much of a chance of a draft at this point?

All I can tell you is that as of last fall, the plan was to do it on the 4/28 Raw, after the PPV.  Whether it will happen now I can't say but following up the first question, I think it should since they need to give people reasons to tune into Raw and the draft is a great hook.

Why is is the area where the wrestlers enter the arena called the "gorilla position"?

It was made famous by the late Gorilla Monsoon, who sat by the entrance-way where the wrestlers came out of the back and gave them their cues.  It was named The Gorilla Position in his honor.

With the recent announcement of the Prime Time Wrestling show in Belleville, Michigan coming up in May, do you think this is a sign of some sort that Sid Vicious is thinking about signing with TNA since he is on a card full of TNA talent? I know in a recent interview with him he stated he wouldn't work with TNA because he thinks they are too small time, and he can still perform in front of WWE size audiences, but maybe he's realizing Vince isn't going to pick up that phone and give him a ring. Do you think Sid would sign with TNA for "one last run"? Do you even think TNA would be interested in signing him? I guess we could see a Kevin Nash Vs. Sid Vicious bout, but I'm sure the fans would be more interested in a Matt Morgan Vs. Sid Vicious match. Either way, I think he could fit in a few ways with different talents on the TNA roster, what do you think?

At this point I think it's pretty clear that Sid would like another big run.  He would prefer WWE but if TNA made him a good offer, I think he would consider it and I would guess that if it was good enough, he would sign on.

Regarding the upcoming King of the Ring on RAW, don't you feel it would be a good idea to have the tourney with mostly mid and lower card guys, rather than the top names who don't need the King title anyway, and are going to be busy in their own segments on RAW promoting Backlash?

I am sensing a theme here today!  Given the recent ratings problems for Raw, I think it would be a huge mistake to push lower card guys tonight.  You have to put on a show that people care about if you hope to get them to tune in.  But, I do agree with what you are saying.  A Triple H or John Cena do not need to win this.  But, WWE can both do the tournament and promote Sunday's PPV by having guys in Sunday's bouts cost their opponents their matches and thus elevate a mid-card guy to "king" status.
