PAUL ELLERING REVEALS THE REASON BEHIND ROCCO THE VENTRILOQUIST DUMMY AND WHY WWE HELD BACK THE LEGION OF DOOM

By WorldWrestlingInsanity.com on 2008-03-11 13:31:59
There's few people who embody the word "toughness" like Precious Paul Ellering.  He's been an accomplished bodybuilder, wrestler, manager, and racer on the 1100 dog sled race, The Iditarod.  Now, he comes to ClubWWI.com for a rare 52 minute uncut shoot to discuss it all.

From the accident during his racing of the Iditarod that nearly left him blind to his years managing the Legion of Doom, Paul holds nothing back in this nearly one hour ClubWWI.com shoot.  Other topics include: How The Road Warriors Made Sure Opponents Sold For Them, Memories of Michael "Hawk" Hegstrand, Turning on LOD to Join DOA, Why He Didn’t Debut in WWF with The LOD, Feelings on Demolition, Working Against a Young Jesse Ventura, Nearly Going Blind While Racing The Iditarod, Legion of Doom 2000 With Sunny, Legion of Doom 2005 With Heidenreich, Working The First War Games,, and More

One of the topics that James Guttman had always wondered about was WWF's introduction of Rocco The Ventriloquist Dummy to the Legion of Doom.  When Animal appeared on ClubWWI.com, he didn’t speak highly of the angle, which many thought was done to discredit the Roadies.  Paul's thoughts on it are:

"It was just a point to, uh, the office at that time thought the guys just can't get no sympathy.  It was just something thrown in there to give them a perk.  Maybe work something around it, but nothing ever came of it. "

JG brought up all the rumors at the time about angles involving the dummy, but none happened.  Ellering said that they could have done a lot with it, but didn't do anything.  Guttman then asked about the LOD in WWF altogether.  Specifically citing their shoulder pads, James asks if the Roadies were too polished in the company when their gimmick was that of two rough guys.

"The WWE never let 'em run, you know?  Actually go with what got them there.  I think they just held them back because the business, by the time the '90s, the single wrestler was so strong, more than a tag team….The singles wrestler was so much more compelling.  Storylines much bigger.  By then, the early 90s, the guys had slowed down already and people had seem them so many times that the luster had worn off.  You feel like, we got it, why don't they let us do it?  They see it differently.  'Well they got it now, but they won't have it next year.  We better go with these guys because we know where they're gonna be.'"

Paul speaks highly of WWE though throughout the  52 minute ClubWWI.com interview and addresses a number of other angles they did including Hawk's alcoholic gimmick, the new LOD incarnations, and more.  Not to mention, the tons of topics from his entire storied career.
