PWINSIDER Q & A: VINCE'S LOST LOVE FOR RANDY SAVAGE, THE GREAT STAN HANSEN, BRODY SHOOTING ON LUGER, GOLDBERG IN THE WWE HALL AND MORE

By Dave Scherer on 2008-03-09 12:04:58

You guys will probably be outraged by this question, but the reason I ask it is just because I'm curious about your opinion. Also, I'm not campaigning to have this event I'm asking about happen, nor do I think it will ever happen myself. My question is: What is the likelihood that Bill Goldberg will ever be inducted into, or even considered for induction into, the WWE Hall of Fame? Just curious about an opinion.

Outraged?  Why?  I don't think he deserves it because he was a one-hit wonder and had no staying power in the business, but I can't say your suggestion offends me or anything.  To me, he was given the perfect gimmick and had the right look at the right time in WCW and got over for a while.  But, after that initial run he was never the same.  With that said, you could make an argument for his inclusion, so it's not an off-the-wall comment or anything.

How come Stan Hansen never got a run in the WWF (not WWWF)? I've been watching his work quite a bit lately on AWA and YouTube, and was wondering if Vince failed to recognize his potential, if his reputation as a super-stiff worker preceded him, or what? Personally I can't get enough of the guy's matches (even vs. Hogan in Japan!), and wish I could have watched him more when he was active.

Hansen was an all-time great, no doubt.  I loved the guy's work and even named my newsletter (The Wrestling Lariat) after him in 1995.  Vince was well aware of Stan, and vice versa.  Stan loved working the stiff style he perfected and was not the kind of guy to be involved in the pageantry that was the WWF, especially at that time.  Also, the lion share of his career was spent working for All Japan.  It was his priority and he would never have committed to working for the WWF full time at the expense of his deal in Japan.  He did work for Verne Gagne's AWA when he was home from Japan and held the AWA Title for about six months in 1986.  In the end, he was just not a good fit for Vince.

The story I've always heard about the infamous Brody/Luger cage match was that Luger simply got fed up with Brody's no-selling and left the ring. However, on Bruiser's Wikipedia profile (not the most reliable source, I know), it says that he had taped razor blades to his fingers intending to teach Luger a lesson, and Lex figured out what was about to happen and took off. Which is true?

The first one is closer to the truth!  The Wikipedia thing is fiction.  I have seen the match a few times.  Luger was a young, super muscular guy who was over-pushed due to his physique.  He had been pushed as the next Hulk Hogan in Florida and was leaving the territory to get the same push in the Carolinas.  His quick ascent rubbed a lot of veterans in the territory the wrong way.  Whether that affected Brody's thinking, who knows.  But, the story at the time was that since Luger was leaving to go to the Crocketts, Brody was supposed to win big in the match.  Luger, reportedly, wouldn't agree to that finish saying he had to protect his spot in the Carolinas (which back then made no sense).  They had a cage match with Brody and after initially working with Luger, Brody just decided to stop selling for him in any way, shape or form.  Luger tried to make it work, but Brody wouldn't work with him.  So, Luger finally just left the ring.  There wasn't a whole of professionalism on either side of the ring that night.

I'm not asking for reasons or rumors why Randy Savage seems to be the only person who's permanently burned his WWE bridge, but I've seen you guys write things in the past that suggest you at least have a pretty good idea (or heard some suggestions) as to why that might be. My question is, if there is a general consensus as to whatever that reason seems most likely to be....did this happen before he left the WWF (and is that why he left?) or did something happen after he joined WCW?

On the contrary, I have no idea at all.  There is an urban legend rumor that has been going around for a while that is scandalous but I have not ever been able to get anyone to corroborate and I don't believe it to be true.  I think very few people know what the reason is here because even high level WWE employees are in the dark as to why Vince has so much heat with Savage.  There is no general consensus because hardly anyone knows what the problem is.

Has there ever been a tag team where one wrestler was named Skull and his partner was named Bones? The reason I ask is I was sitting before my computer, waiting for the Q&A page to download (I'm on dial-up modem) and wondering what would be a good name for a tag team when Skull & Bones immediately popped into my head. In fact, it popped into my head so fast that I'm certain it can't be original and that someone must have thought of Skull & Bones before I.

Hmmm, weren't they the guys who later worked as Dum and Fu....oh never mind. If they ever did work together, I am glad I never heard of them because anyone who every picked a name as lame as that shouldn't have gotten in the business to begin with.
