PWINSIDER Q & A: IS IT JR OR CREATIVE WHO CAN'T REMEMBER, JEFF HARDY'S BLOOD, SMACKDOWN IN HD, THE IC TITLE AND MORE

By Dave Scherer on 2008-02-18 10:00:00

I read on a site today that MyNetworkTV is the leader for getting the rights to Smackdown but one drawback is them not having an HD TV feed.  That can't be true can it since the government wants all over the air broadcasters to offer HD feeds?

I checked on my cable system (Comcast) and on DirecTV and they do indeed have the HD feed (I guess you can tell how often I watch that network).  The picture, as you would expect, is markedly better than the standard definition broadcasts that air on the regular feed.  Maybe the person who posted the item that felt that since he didn't have it on his cable that it wasn't there, but it is.  Now, whether the network actually gets Smackdown or not is to be determined.  We did hear that they were the favorite but things can change quickly in the TV business.

I am watching Raw and Paul Burchill just came out and more than once JR spoke of his "debut". WHAAAAT??? Burchill has been on Raw in 2 different incarnations. Once as Regal's partner, and once as the pirate. Is this just another case of "Creative' thinking we have no memory again?

Yes, that is purely creative.  Believe me, Jim Ross has a great memory for what he has seen and called in the business.  If it were up to him, he would call it as close to straight as possible.  But, it's not up to him and he is told what to say, often in the headset by the Chairman himself.  Vince and company feel that they can take "poetic license" with their product and they do so liberally.

BY GAWD! Hardy and HBK! Early Match of the Year candidate? Plus, as far as you know, has Jeff ever had any accidents with the piercings? It looked like his chin one was bleeding tonight (well, last week anyway at the taping).

Oh yes, he definitely got his piercing pulled in that match, causing the bleeding that you saw.  Frankly, I think anyone who wrestles with one of those is crazy.  Enough can go wrong in the ring without tempting fate like that.  And yes, Hardy-Michaels will surely be on the ballot for top bouts of the year next January.

Hey guys, do you think WWE would be interested in trying to get Smackdown moved to Tuesdays when they move (hopefully) to a new network. Being on Tuesday would allow them to go live, and then move ECW to a different night on tape. Or do you think it is possible that if they do not get a new network they would get a second hour on Sci Fi and put Smackdown there live and do away with ECW or make it an internet show? I know "anything is possible" but do you think there is any real chances of these scenarios happening?

I think if they had the option between Friday on tape or Tuesday live, they would take Tuesday since more people watch TV then and they could also carry over angles from Raw if they chose to.  If they went from 8 to 10 on MyNetworkTV, they could also do ECW live at 10 p.m.  I don't see them ending up on CBS, NBC or ABC so they would only have the 8 to 10 window open anyway with the broadcast networks.  If they end up on cable, well we will see what happens then.  Going on Sci Fi wouldn't be what WWE wanted, that's for sure.  I think if they can't get on broadcast network, they would try and get a second night on USA.  Whether that would happen or not, who knows.  My hunch is they will end up on MyNetworkTV.

Do you think Jeff Hardy now being one of the hottest superstars and in the main title picture has helped restore some of the grandeur of the Intercontinental Championship? Also, because he's so hot, do you think it's time he passes it on and to whom would you give it?

No I don't, and it's not Jeff's fault.  The IC Title has been booked to be worthless and that is how people see it.  When Randy Orton would rather get DQ'd at the start of a match rather than try and win it, that tells you all you need to know about how the company sees that strap.  And, how they see it affects how we see it.  To answer your second question, I really don't think it matters who gets the belt next.  The WWE and World Championships are what matter in WWE.
