PWINSIDER Q & A: BRET HART VS. RIC FLAIR, AUSTIN-HOGAN, INCEST ANGLE, CENA'S INJURY AND MORE

By Dave Scherer on 2008-02-06 10:03:56

Seeing that The Wonder Boy John Cena came back extremely ahead of schedule, any chance his prognosis was a work? Did the WWE say 10-12 months just to make it more dramatic, and make him seem superhuman when he returned in 4 months? Edge had a similar injury in 2007 and he returned in about 4 months. Could Cena's "year-long struggle back" all have been a work?

A work?  No.  He was injured, for sure.  We just don't know the extent of the injury.  They said it was a torn pec muscle.  I have also heard it was a torn tendon.  Whatever the case, no one was ever implicitly clear as to what the injury or its extent was.  Once they announced the injury for what they said it was, it wouldn't make sense for them to say he would be back sooner.  It just makes more sense to bring him back as a surprise.  I am under the impression that when they got in to do the surgery, it wasn't as bad as they expected and it allowed him to come back faster.  We had been reporting on the site for a while before his return that he was well ahead of schedule, so I just think it's a case of WWE getting better than expected news on the prognosis and then using his return as a cool surprise for the fans.

What are the chances of Austin and Hogan being on the Wrestlemania card? And could we actually see them facing each other? That would be the most anticipated match of this long-time wrestling fans life!

I would put the odds of them facing each other at Mania at zero.  Austin clearly wants nothing to do with a Hogan match and unless the Hulkster offers to do the job, I don't see it happening.  I think there's an excellent chance that Austin will appear and a good chance that Hogan will.  In what capacity, I can't say.

So as I’m sure you know by now, Paul Burchill and Katie Lea are supposed to be doing an incest angle in dark matches, where Paul and Katie are “siblings”. WHY does Vince think this is a good idea? Didn’t Stephanie mention that he had brought up an incest angle with her before, and she shot it down? What’s the deal with this man? Do you have ANY hopes for this angle?????

I have no hopes at all for this angle being anything but an embarrassing mistake.  Yes, Vince did propose doing an incest angle with Stephanie in the past according to WWE's own video.  Why he thinks it makes for good TV is beyond me but he does.  I think it's creepy, disturbing, unentertaining and shows a really warped side to anyone who thinks doing it is a good idea.  Then again, Vince thinks that having Hornswoggle biting his ass is a good idea, so what do you expect?

My question surrounds the road to WrestleMania. Is it just me, or does John Cena's upcoming title match against Randy Orton at No Way Out kind of detract from the whole traditional point of the Royal Rumble? For the casual fan, if someone wins the Rumble and can pick and choose when they want their title shot, what's the point of winning the Rumble? The tradition has always been the title shot at WrestleMania, and while I understand that WWE Creative is at a real crossroads right now, it seems to me that the last thing you'd want to do is stray from one of the most treasured and (more importantly) easily understood traditions of World Wrestling Entertainment. I'm curious to hear your thoughts on this.

I understand your point of view but I am on the other side of the street here. I love that they are mixing up how Mania will shake out.  I love that everything is on the line for both Raw and Smackdown at No Way Out.  It actually makes the show important and compelling to me.  Yes, it kills the traditional aspect of the Rumble winner going on to Mania but it also creates a PPV that is important at a time when it wasn't really before the new matches were announced.  Given the fact that PPV buyrates are falling overall, I think it's worth taking the chance to get some more interest in No Way Out.  Mania is Mania, it will do well no matter what.

After finally watching the Ric Flair set, the Horseman set, and the Bret Hart set, I wondered how you rank Flair and Hart compared to each other? I just don't see how Hart can be compared to Flair, I realize how great a wrestler he was and how he could make whoever was in the ring look great, but to me Flair has been doing it longer with far more people than Hart. Your thoughts?

This is a question that people will throw down on, for sure.  It all depends on what you look for in a wrestler (and to a degree whether you are Canadian).  I look at the main factors in play here and I will check off who I think is the better man in each one.

  Bret Hart Ric Flair

Promo Ability

  X
Charisma   X
Longevity   X
Overall Draw   X
In-Ring Talent Tie Tie
Winner   X

Looking at the major factors, I don't see any category where Hart beats Flair.  On the other hand, Flair wins almost every category and even the one that they tied is subjective based off of what you expect from a worker.  If I had to break the tie, I would give Flair the edge there as well.  Now, I know people will disagree with me and I respect that, but that is my take on the question.
