PWINSIDER Q&A: WHAT IS HD?, RIC FLAIR AT WRESTLEMANIA, CHRISTOPHER DANIELS AND MORE

I've been reading where the WWE/Raw/USA Network were going to convert to HD. I don't want to sound naive you understand but, what exactly is HD? What is it suppose to do? Are people making a bigger deal out of it than they should be?

Courtesy of the University of Delaware, here is the definition for you:

HDTV stands for High Definition Television. HDTV enhances the quality of the picture on your screen and the quality of the sound. Some of the features of HDTV are:

  • Higher picture sharpness
  • Larger picture
  • More colors
  • Wider picture
  • Multi-channel digital cd quality sound

Under the proposed HDTV standard pictures will have 6 times the resolution of current TV and it will be a full 60 frames per second temporal resolution which is twice the current NTSC images. Motion will be seen smooth and the picture will be clear enough to sit very close to a very large screen. The picture will be displayed in a panoramic 16:9 horizontal-to-vertical aspect ratio to be more like movies and add the feeling of realism to TV.

In layman's terms, it is a kickass picture and sound!  Now, that said, less than 40% of U.S. households have an HD-compatible TV set, and even less receive an HD television signal.  So, if you're not watching WWE in HD, you are still amongst the vast majority of fans.  That said, with the television industry moving to an all-digital format, eventually more and more shows will be broadcast in HD and I would expect it to become the industry standard in the next decade or so.

With Ric Flair's rumored last match being at Wrestlemania this year, I started to think about the last time Ric actually wrestled a singles competition at Wrestlemania. I know he teamed with Batista and Randy Orton at Wrestlemania XX, but I believe the last one on one match was all the way back in 2002 when he wrestled Undertaker at Wrestlemania X8. Has it really been almost 6 years for the Nature Boy to be on the card, or am I mistaken? And when was the last time he won his match at Wrestlemania?

Here is a listing of all of Ric Flair's Wrestlemania matches:

Wrestlemania VIII - April 5, 1992 - Lost the WWF World Title to Randy Savage.
Wrestlemania X-8 - March 17, 2002 - Lost to The Undertaker.
Wrestlemania XX - March 14, 2004 - With Randy Orton & Batista, defeated Mick Foley & The Rock in a handicap match when Orton pinned Foley.
Wrestlemania 22 - April 2, 2006 - Participated in the Money In The Bank Ladder match with Rob Van Dam (winner), Shelton Benjamin, Fit Finlay, Matt Hardy and Bobby Lashley.
Wrestlemania 23 - April 1, 2007 - In a dark match (highlights shown during the PPV), teamed with Carlito to defeat Gregory Helms & Chavo Guerrero when Carlito pinned Helms.

Yep, Ric Flair's Wrestlemania record consists of two singles losses, two tag team wins (one of which was dark, and neither of which saw Flair get the pinfall), and a Money In The Bank appearance.

I'm a big Fallen Angel Christopher Daniels fan.  Is he going to the WWE? If not do you know where he is going?

Christopher Daniels is still part of TNA.  His being "fired" is just a storyline.  Keep watching TNA, and you will see him return (although watch closely, as he won't be returning as the Fallen Angel right away).

Do you think the value of the WWE Championship is a little bit better now since the long reign of John Cena and the good feuds that Randy Orton has been having since winning the title?

I didn't think the title was bad off to begin with, but I do think having longer title reigns has helped make the title seem "more important" than a few years back when title changes seemed to be a monthly (or weekly) occurrence. I think having great matches like Cena vs. Michaels and Triple H vs. Orton also helps the perception of the title as being something important.

Do you believe from a business standpoint or just being a fan that a win for Jeff Hardy at the Rumble, winning the title (which truthfully I don't think is going to happen) do you think that would be a good move? I believe it would be cool but I wonder if he doesn't win the title will he lose some steam like Booker T did when he lost to Triple H at Wrestlemania or could he maintain his status and win the title later down the line?

Both from a business and fan standpoint, I think putting the WWE Title on Jeff Hardy is the right move.  He is over huge, sells merchandise, and winning the championship would be the last step in cementing him as a top star on the level of a Shawn Michaels or Triple H in the eyes of many fans.  If they don't put the title on him this Sunday, then they will need a hell of an angle on Monday to keep him from losing steam.  Given his performances on Raw the past few weeks, I don't think he has ever been hotter, and the time to give him the belt is now.
