PWINSIDER Q & A: GOOD HEELS VS. BORING HEELS, CUTTING THE RUMBLE TO 20 MEN, DOOM REUNION, CM PUNK'S PUSH AND MORE

By Dave Scherer on 2008-01-23 10:00:00

Will the Royal Rumble match ever be reduced to 20 men? That would get rid of 10 guys that the fans know have no chance in hell of winning. Having 5 possible winners out of 20 is much more interesting than 5 out of 30.

I don't see it happening.  Those extra ten guys serve purposes.  They add time to the bout, which makes guys lasting 60 minutes possible.  They serve as fodder for the big monster that comes in and tosses 8 guys.  Plus, it allows creative to have guys in undercard programs to interact with each other, adding to the overall entertainment of the match itself.

With Butch Reed possibly becoming an agent for WWE do you see a scenario where on Smackdown Teddy Long gets so fed up with Edge Vickie and the Edge Heads where he would reform Doom to take on the Edge and the Edge Heads?

The only place I see it right now is in this question but if Butch was in shape to do it, a Doom reunion would be pretty cool for us old timers.  The problem with it is that you don't want to have two older guys come in and either beat up or be competitive with your top heel and two rising young guys.  I don't think that makes sense.  Now, if Doom showed up, faced off, did OK for a few minutes then got destroyed and laid out, that would be believable.

Would you prefer or at least take in consideration, that a heel wins the Royal Rumble and/or a Royal Rumble winner does not win the big gold at WrestleMania? I find it so obvious and somewhat boring that the face (in peril) wins the Rumble and go on to Mania and win the big gold. In my opinion it takes away the drama in the 30-man rumble, when 2 guys are left and you know, the heel doesn't have a chance of winning.

I hear what you are saying but right now WWE has two heel champions (and they are real heels, not tweeners) in Randy Orton and Edge.  Heel vs. heel matches don't usually sell so they are limited in what they can do at the Rumble.  It's just a shame that they haven't done a better job of building up heels to challenge CM Punk because if they did, they could have a heel in the mix at the end.  What would make sense now is to have the Rumble come down to three or four faces at the end.  That way, it will keep the suspense up.

You mentioned, that CM Punk could/should win money in the bank this year. I think, there is a good chance, that he indeed will win this thing. But, what has he done to deserve that prominent role? In my opinion he has become a failure, because with his current reign as ECW World Champion ECW on SCI FI slipped in the ratings to the point, that TNA actually beat ECW this week. You guys always say, that the brand's champion is (mostly) responsible for the rating. So again, what did Punk in your opinion to deserve winning money in the bank other than some indy-accomplishments several years ago???

The champ is the barometer of the brand.  The problem is, ECW isn't a brand.  It's a TV show.  Raw and Smackdown are brands.  I blame the falling ECW rating on the nature and booking of the show, not Punk.

What has CM Punk done?  Exactly what has been booked for him.  That is the problem.  Creative has continually made him look weak and put him in repetitive, lackluster programs.  He has gotten almost no chance to show what he can, or can't, do.  Winning MITB would finally put him in the position where WWE can see what they have in him and I certainly think he would be a viable person to put in the spot.

I know, you always making fun of heel wrestlers like Randy Orton and JBL for being somewhat "boring", while you praise Edge as the best heel in WWE today. I have to say, I am a big fan and supporter of Edge since day one. But, how can you become a heel, when most fans applaud and cheer you? Isn't a heel supposed to make fans hate the wrestler? On the other side, aren't guys like Randy Orton and JBL supposed to being somewhat methodical, arrogant etc. to make your opponent (babyface) look good? In my opinion Edge vs. Jeff Hardy wouldn't work like Orton vs. Jeff, because almost nobody hates Edge. Your thoughts please!!!

In 2008, the traditional heel-face concept is pretty much a thing of the past.  To me, it comes down to how good is the persona at their job and how entertaining they are.  When I watch Edge cut promos, I am entertained.  When I watch Orton and JBL cut them, I am usually bored.  Being arrogant alone doesn't make you a heel.  We all know people who are arrogant AND boring.  They aren't entertaining.

And I disagree with you.  Edge and Hardy would be a great program because Edge is great at playing the sniveling, backstabbing heel and Hardy would definitely benefit from it.  At times, I think Hardy is getting over in spite of Orton's dullness.  Now don't get me wrong, I know that some people like Orton.  Some love him.  But, a lot of people also find him boring.
