PWINSIDER Q & A: BIG SHOW'S CONTRACT, KANE, MONEY IN THE BANK, HATING ON CENA AND MORE

By Dave Scherer on 2008-01-14 10:02:48

I am confused about The Big Show's contract with WWE. I remember when he signed with the company in 1999 from WCW, didn't he sign a 10 year deal?? If that was the case, how was he able to get out of it before 2009?

The word I got is that Show's original agent/manager filed a lawsuit after a falling out with Show. The agent/manager also sued WWE. WWE, trying to take some expenses off the books, settled the lawsuit by paying the agent/manager what he had coming, deducted it from Show's check and then "renegotiated" a new deal with Show without the agent/manager.  It ended up taking two years off the deal.  Even if someone signs a contract and it hasn't expired, if they decide to retire and not work in the business, WWE really can't force them to come in and perform.  Now, Show is about to return to WWE so a new deal has been reached.

Was Kane better with the mask?

I think his character certainly had more momentum when he was wearing the mask.  I think he was a more high end character then as well.  So, if that is how you define better, I would agree with you.

Do you think they should make the MIB ladder match a permanent occurrence?

I do, yes.  I like the fact that it can be used to not only establish a contender, but also to elevate a talent.  It gives the company a chance to see how a guy who hasn't been a main-eventer before will do in the spot without WWE having to do the work of elevating him.  It certainly did wonders for Edge's career.

I was just browsing WWE's VOD section, and watching the Hardcore Hangover for the now infamous episode of ECW on Sci- Fi featuring Batista V. Big Show at the Hammerstein. I was wondering, what was the back stage reaction to all of the "You Both Suck" and "Change The Channel" chants? ..And how did Big Show and Batista handle it?

From what I heard, Vince McMahon pretty much wrote it off to "a few loudmouth old school ECW fans.  Show took it pretty much in stride.  Batista got pretty ticked off by how he was received.

You think one of the reasons people don't like Cena is because of the Hip-Hop character, but I'd say otherwise. I think the mismanagement of that particular character is what turned many people off. If you remember Cena in 2003, it was the Hip-Hop character that made him stand out in the first place. I could take myself as an example, I loved the Cena character in 2003. Utilizing battle rhymes in wrestling promos fit like a hand in glove and it became a new and innovative way to insult his opponents, people ate it up and Cena even became the "cool heel". Then, in typical WWE fashion, the gimmick watered down. Then came things like the "Chaingang", 5-knuckle shuffle, a weak song in his CD, etc. They took this rough character and Mickey Moused him. In other words he went from Eminem to Vanilla Ice. What do you think?

That could have something to do with it.  I think at least equal factors are that he got a big push before he was really ready for it (even though he has since worked his ass off to improve and has had some great matches) and also that girls and kids like him, which often makes young adult males hate a guy.  As I said, Cena has worked so hard and improved so much that anyone who doesn't appreciate his work now just isn't being fair and is just not looking at the big picture.  I am not saying everyone should love him but people should at least respect his effort and the progress that he has made.
