PWINSIDER Q&A: LAWLER-HART, SHARPSHOOTER, ANDRE BEATS THE AWA AND MORE

I was watching a promo that Jerry Lawler did on the June 26, 1993 edition of USWA wrestling. It was setting up a match with him and the late Owen Hart. Lawler gave a fiery, intense kick-ass promo that gave me chills. I've always wondered: Was their any legitimate heat between Lawler and WWF/Bret Hart over the whole "true king of wrestling storyline?" Because Lawler seemed to partially shoot but yet stay professional and tell a story through that awesome promo.

Not at all.  You're just watching a great performer do what he does best.

I have a question about the sharpshooter/scorpion deathlock hold. Who started using this hold first, I recall Terry Taylor using this move in the late 80's Red Rooster WWF run, calling it the "Cock of the Walk" or something like that. I never got a lot of Stings early career on TV, UWF and the last couple of years in Crocket's promotion, so I don't know exactly when he started using it and I don't believe Bret Hart started using it until the early 90's.

New Japan Pro Wrestling's Riki Choshu invented the hold, which was called the Scorpion, in the 1980's.

I heard about a story that I hope you tell me if it is true or not. Did Andre The Giant defeat the ENTIRE American Wrestling Association (AWA) Roster in a battle royal?? If so, when did this happen? Who were the wrestlers in that Battle Royal from the AWA? What was Andre doing in the AWA when he was a regular for the WWF and since he eliminated every wrestler in the AWA, Shouldn't Andre the Giant have been crowned AWA World Heavyweight Champion? I hope you can clear this up for me. Thank you!

The match you are thinking of was the Battle Royale at the Turkey Day Turmoil show back in 1982.  It was just a regular battle royale with most of the AWA's top stars.  However, a wrestling magazine did an article on it with the headline "Andre The Giant Defeats The Whole AWA In One Night".  The AWA belt was not on the line, obviously.  In the battle royale were Hulk Hogan, Jerry Blackwell, Bobby Duncum, Ken Patera, Larry Hennig Ray Stevens and other top stars.  Andre while booked through the WWF, often appeared for the AWA and other organizations, as this was the period where Vince McMahon Sr. had Andre travel through different territories for short stays.

First off, I know his introduction is a homage to old school microphones and announcers. However, I thought the "repeating" of his name was simply a simulation of when those old microphones that hung from the top of the building would produce an echo. I thought his repeating of his name was indeed the echo. A friend of mine thought he repeated his name because some announcers of the past would announce a full name, then repeat the last name. Any thoughts on what he's really doing?

He's doing the old bit of announcing the full name, then the last name.

Secondly, do you guys agree that Kennedy just is not interesting anymore? When he came in, he was new, fresh, and a welcome addition to the main event picture. He won Money in the Bank at Wrestlemania, there was a graphic on WWE.com counting down the days until he was going to be in one of the main events at Wrestlemania XXIV, and he was going to be a McMahon. Boom, he gets suspended, and all of a sudden, he seems boring, his workrate has suffered, and frankly, I don't care to see the guy anymore. I couldn't be less interested in his match with HBK at the PPV. Did his ship sail?

Things definitely are not going his way as of late, and part of it is due to outside the ring mistakes, but he's also had some less than inspiring performances in the ring.  Honestly, I think he's in a position where he needs to deliver in some big matches (like this Sunday against HBK) to show he is worthy of the push.
