PWINSIDER Q&A: JOHN CENA ON CNN, TAG TEAMS, WWE INTERVIEWERS AND MORE

By Buck Woodward on 2007-11-10 10:00:00

I went back and watched it a 2nd time since I was so taken aback by John Cena's statement and started thinking if it was just edited to look bad could it have been Cena was trying to make the point that no answer he gave would be accepted. Since people won't believe him if he says he didn't and if he says he did then everyone is right, and it just came off to look bad. I have seen many Cena interviews regarding this issue and can't see him after all of this him just coming out and saying yeah I have. What do you think?

I certainly would not be surprised if Cena's quote was taken out of context, however by phrasing it the way he did, he left himself wide open to be made to look bad.  He should have said "I tried them, but I don't use them now" or something along those lines.  His "you'll never be able to prove it" statement immediately made it look like he had something to hide.  It's not like he said "you'll never be able to prove it, because I haven't used them in years" or something along those lines.

NOTE: Obviously, I answered the above question BEFORE WWE posted the unedited video on WWE.com.

Of the currently active tag teams in wrestling today, what pairing would make for the best match in your opinion? My ideal matches would be The Motor City Machine Guns vs. Kendrick and London OR the Briscoes vs. LAX.

I'd actually like to see extended runs with LAX vs. Tomko & Styles and Kendrick & London vs. Haas & Benjamin, and those are matches that we could be seeing.  I'd also like to see Kendrick & London vs. LAX, and I think MVP & Matt Hardy vs. Kendrick & London could be a lot of fun as well.

Admittedly, I don't follow TNA all that closely BUT don't they do the "Mystery Partner" angle all the time?

I wouldn't say "all the time" but TNA has often pulled out the "mystery partner/opponent/debut" card fairly frequently.

If WWE wanted Hogan vs. Austin so badly, then why not in 2002? When the NWO came in how did they decide on Rock v. Hogan when they could have substituted Austin in the same role. Maybe then Austin wouldn't have walked out and people would still be speculating. Your thoughts?

WWE had a choice to make prior to Wrestlemania that year.  It was either going to be Rock vs. Hogan or Austin vs. Hogan.  They went with Rock vs. Hogan, and ended up with a tremendous match.  Had Austin not walked out soon after, I am sure WWE would have worked on a Hogan-Austin match then.  Hindsight being what it is, WWE probably could have had Austin-Hogan at Wrestlemania and saved Rock vs. Hogan, but you can't go back in time.

Going back 20 years, I noticed this pattern for WWF/E backstage interviewers....... Craig DeGeorge, Sean Mooney, Todd Pettengill, Michael Cole, Todd Grisham. What is Vince McMahon's obsession with young skinny males with dark hair being backstage interviewers?

I don't know about the hair connection, but I can tell you that a general rule of thumb is that you want interviewers that make the wrestlers look "larger than life", so a short, skinny announcer makes a wrestler look a lot better than if they were standing next to someone bigger than them.
