The series of events that led to the fight between MMA legend Don Frye and the bodyguard for Leland Chapman were as follows. Once the MMA show was canceled, there was a meeting at the hotel where the promoter Phil Flathers explained their wouldn't be payoffs since there wasn't a show. Frye was attempting to mediate and keep the peace when Leland Chapman, who at one point was scheduled to fight, began mouthing off. After trying to defuse the situation, Frye finally chewed him out and offered to step outside. When they did, "Frye was sucker punched" by Chapman's bodyguard as he exited the hotel lobby. Frye grabbed the bodyguard and took him down with a single leg takedown and began beating with him punches before being pulled off. There was then a second incident in the hotel parking lot where Frye was again "sucker punched" which led to Scott Norton coming to his aid.
I was told that the primary promtoer, Chris Salsbury, quietly exited the hotel everyone was booked in due to a confrontation with Scott Steiner, and at one point, Salbury "locked himself" in his room. Salsbury has been hard to get an audience with all weekend according to numerous people who have had business dealings with him. As of this writing, no one knows if and when he'll pop up again and there's concern about the checks he gave a number of the talents not clearing.
The third and final day of the Wrestlefanfest is set for today with Steve Austin (who by all accounts was paid in advance and is already in San Francisco) appearing plus a live event being run by Ring of Honor. As one ROH source intimated to me, unless they are prevented from running the show by the venue for some unforeseen reason out of their control, there will be a show today. ROH officials met with the Cow Palace upon their arrival in California to make sure they would be able to run.
