I was watching the Sting vs. Sid Vicious title match from Halloween Havoc ‘90 and was very confused by the finish. Initially the Horsemen came to ringside and a “fake†Sting was pinned by Vicious while the real Sting was out in the aisle. Sid was declared the new world champ. Then the real Sting returned, hit Vicious with the title belt in front of the referee, and rolled him up in a small package for the pin. Capetta then announced Sting to be the winner, though there was never any indication of the match being restarted. On the edit of this match, this all seems to have happened within a couple of minutes, which seemed to leave the crowd--and certainly myself--very confused. Was this the intended finish, or was it botched? What was the eventual planned outcome of this feud?
No, what you saw was the planned finish. The pivotal thing that you seem to have missed is that Sting wasn't in the aisle, but was all the way in the back, behind the curtain. The idea was that Sting got jumped in the back by the Horsemen and tied up (note the rope on Sting's arm when he comes out at the end) during the match. Sid returned to the ring with Barry Windham, dressed as Sting, and got the pin. However, when the real Sting came out, the referee saw what had happened, and "restarted" the match, even though no announcement was made of that being the case.
Do you think Hulk Hogan will really open his own company? In all honesty, While I love to see some more competition in the wrestling industry, this would be a bad career move for Hulk don't you think? I mean he's already stated that he would "crush Vince" if he opened his own company and I'm sure with Vince having as big of an ego as he does that he has taken note of that comment. In the end, Hogan opens the company it flops in a year and then all of a sudden if he wants to work in wrestling he'll have to go back to the WWE and you could see Vince ultimately "destroy Hulkamania" as he always loves to do... Build them up and them tear them down. Hogan could suffer the same fate as Bischoff or Heyman, once rivals of the WWE and then were brought in pretty much so Vince could control them and rub it in their faces that "he had won". So do you think A) He should open the company, B) if it will happen and C) whether or not it would even make it past a couple of years if he did open?
Should Hulk Hogan open his own company? Absolutely, it would be another wrestling product and give wrestlers another place to work. Will it happen? Not if Hogan has to put his own money up for it. Would it last more than a few years? That would be dependent on how much money was behind it and who Hogan had running it.
Why is it that whenever the question of "best ever" comes up, the answers seem to indicate that professional wrestling began in the 1980s? For instance, the question about the best tag team ever in the 8/10/07 column did not give even lip service to such tag teams as Jerry and Eddie Graham, The Fabulous Kangaroos, The Miller Brothers, the Ghallager Brothers, Bruiser and Crusher, Mark Lewin and Don Curtis, and others of the 50s, 60s, and 70s.
Sorry, I grew up in the 80's, and don't have a lot of 50's and 60's wrestling in my tape collection. Most of the 70's stuff I have is from Japan. I will say that my father has told me that the Grahams were a hell of a team! I do think that when historical questions come up, the answer will often come from a point in time that has been recorded for posterity. For example, the "best match ever" will be one you can see on video tape, not one that was held in front of a live crowd and never filmed.
I've watched TNA for quite some time and I was wondering: Why are their referees such wimps? They look small compared to the wrestlers. During the six man match recently on Impact! the referee was almost hit by a flying chair. He looked lost in there. Why he was in there, I will never know. TNA should hire bigger referees. The ones they have right know, the women of TNA could beat them all up with no problem. What do you think?
Referees should be wimps, because it makes the wrestlers look tougher. It really is that simple. Smaller referees make wrestlers look even bigger. It's all part of the illusion of wrestling. I know for a fact that promoters would often put the smallest referee out there for Andre The Giant matches, because it would make Andre look even more monstrous.
Do wrestlers, male and female, have agents? People who negotiate contracts on behalf of their client? Does the WWE, TNA and ROH like to deal with agents or would they prefer to talk directly with the wrestlers themselves face to face?
While some top stars do have agents, most wrestlers do not. In most cases, the wrestler simply has a lawyer that reviews the contract for them, but doesn't actually negotiate with the company. And in some cases, the wrestler doesn't have anyone look at the contract at all (which, in my opinion, is ill-advised).
