Do you think it might possibly be a little unfair to blame the death angle of Vince McMahon for WWE's stock prices falling? If you look at the history of the stock, it has seen declines an uncountable number of times, as most stocks do. In fact, I just counted 6 times in the last 3 years alone that the share prices dropped in value by more than a dollar per share in a very short time frame. Not condoning the angle, but don't you think it's kind of the "easy way out" to blame a stock failure that we've seen many times in the past, on a storyline many fans are bitter over? All due respect, it seems that way.
You can also point out that the stock market didn't do very well over the previous two weeks either but honestly, I think in this case there is a cause and effect for sure. To be clear, I don't think the stock dropped because fans didn't like the storyline. I think that it dropped initially because at least some investors were worried that Vince had actually died and sold their stock. I also think that the stock continued to go downward because some investors then thought about what would happen to the company when Vince actually died and wondered about his future. Also, right in the whole thing, they took a public, almost 16 million dollar loss on "The Condemned". All in all, it was a bad two weeks for WWE from a Wall Street point of view.
Seeing Steve-O on WWE TV lately is taking me back to the last time he was in the ring. When he and his Jackass buddy Chris Pontius were getting beaten down by Umaga last fall, it looked like Umaga was legit annoyed at Steve-O for no-selling. Did Umaga end up stiffing Steve-O as a result, and was Umaga (or anyone else) upset backstage after the segment?
From what I heard, Umaga was legit annoyed at the way those goofs no-sold his work and a number of guys weren't happy about it backstage. But, when the boss puts those guys on TV, there's not a lot anyone can do about it.
Toward the end of WCW, it seemed like a weekly occurrence that fans’ signs were being blurred out on TV. I don’t ever remember seeing this on WWE shows, even during the same time period (back when signs weren’t being inspected at the door). Did the signs have profanity, or were they being blurred out for other reasons? And why was this such a frequent problem for WCW, but never for WWE?
As I remember it, the vast majority of the signs were very negative about the horrible product that WCW was producing, so they were blurred out by those who were producing it. There were also some pro-WWF signs that were also blocked out. At the end, WCW was largely held together with rubber bands and duct tape. The product was a mess and it was on the Time Warner chopping block due to the impending merger with AOL, which everyone who worked there knew. Those in charge were doing anything that they could to hold on to the cash cow that had been feeding them huge salaries for years so they became over protective of the product, to a ridiculous degree. They took the old "if we don't acknowledge that things are bad maybe the bosses won't figure it out either" mindset. People in power in WCW did all they could to try and keep the fan negativity down, I feel because they wanted to keep Time Warner from selling the company before it merged with AOL. A s we all know, that didn't end up happening.
Ok, call me morbid here, but the recent "death of Mr. McMahon" storyline got me thinking and I came up with a scenario that I was curious to hear your thoughts on. If you're willing to touch this one, that is. Ok here goes: Let's say that all members of the McMahon family tragically died in let's say a plane crash. Horrid thought, yes, but just what if? Vince, Shane, Stephanie and even Linda, no more. What do you think would happen to the WWE and who would be put in charge to run it with no legitimate owner? And just who would put them in that position? Just think about it, if no McMahons were left to run it, would they shut down or would they somehow keep going?
If that happened, the company would be run by Kevin Dunn, who is the number two man there right now in many facets. Provided he wasn't with the family, I think Triple H would take over the creative end of the company.
I think you’ll shudder at the thought, but with the beaten down king the Miz moving to ECW, do you see a possible Mikey Whipwreck-type angle happening where he’ll win the title without a lick of offense?
A lick of offense? What are you talking about? The Miz offends me every time he hits my TV. As for the angle, good lord, I hope not, though if there was ever a guy tailor made to play a loser, it's Miz.
