PWINSIDER Q&A: MVP, THE CLIQUE IN 2007, WWE PPV SPONSORSHIPS, BRUTUS BEEFCAKE & MORE

By Mike Johnson on 2007-06-10 09:34:00

I read on a different wrestling site that MVP wears that "power ranger" looking gear in the ring due to a Malcolm X tattoo on his chest, but what's the deal with him having to wear sleeves on the gear? is there anymore more tattoo's that the higher ups in WWE find "offensive"

If you read it on another site, wouldn't it make sense to direct the question their way?  We don't comment on what is written elsewhere, but I can say that MVP's costuming has nothing to do with the tattoo because it has appeared on WWE TV in the past, including the period where he was selling the burns from the Kane Inferno match.

I was just watching some older WM's (6,7,8) and I was wondering why they were not being sponsored by some big company like all WWE events are now. Seems to me that WM14 (M&Ms) was the first sponsored WM. Are sponsorships a revenue stream that became important when they went national instead of syndicated or did the sponsors back then not demand or deserved the "sponsored by" plug on shows and PPVs?

As the company grew into something beyond just a professional wrestling company, the sponsorships became another revenue stream they began to utilize.  If you notice, Wrestlemania 14 was during the period where the company started its hottest era to date, so obviously that type of business is going to attract companies interested in attaching themselves to the perception of a hot brand.

Way back when I was a kid watching WWF Superstars and Wrestling Challenge here in the UK, I remember a masked man attacking Earthquake when he was destroying jobbers.  I'm pretty sure he also wore a flack jacket.  He used to bring the big man down with a headbutt to the back of the head.  Any ideas who this mystery hero was?

That was actually a discarded storyline that would have brought Brutus Beefcake back to WWF television following his injuries.  I'm not sure why it was dropped but it may have been for health reasons.  He finally returned to the ring in 1993.

Do you think that Tommy Dreamer should be the "GM" figure of ECW? Like Tod Gordon or Heyman from the original ECW.

In terms of credibility with the original ECW fans, you couldn't pick a better name, but the reality is, you could stick anyone in that role because it's not ECW beyond the letters.  I could see WWE using Dreamer in that role if he wants to ever get out of the ring, but my guess is that if they pulled him out of the ring once for an office role and he chose to be a full time wrestler when ECW was relaunched, he's in the role he wants to be in.

Here's a question I always wondered about.  Back in the day there was the "supergroup" known as the clique.  At points in wrestling history most or all of the members were in the same company, then in other points people were in different companies such as Michaels being with WWE and Nash being with WCW.  My question is two fold - during that time did the group ever get together with each other (When working for separate companies) outside of work, and did they ever "talk shop" possibly leading to their perspective companies knowing about storylines early.  Also, does the clique ever get together now?  I have played in several bands, still do.  One of my old bands was really important to all of us as a friendship and we still today make it a point of seeing each other all together once a year or so.  We all live in different states now (Thus the reason we aren't a band anymore) so it is kind of the same thing. You're answer...Thanks!

I've never heard of any instances where one of them were leaking information to the other, but it's well known they all remained and still remain in contact with each other.  I would assume they get together but if they do, that's a private matter and not something that's going to make headlines.
