PWINSIDER Q&A: ECW ON DVD, MARTY JANNETTY IN TNA, MIKE AWESOME'S ECW TITLE REIGN AND MORE

Do you think it would be a good idea for WWE to release an ECW DVD based only around the Eastern Championship Wrestling days?

I would like to see such a DVD, but to be honest, there is so much ECW material that WWE has yet to put out on DVD, that I can't see them doing a specific "Eastern" DVD, unless they are going to put out a series of chronological releases.  I'd rather just see them incorporate more of the older footage into the next ECW compilation disc set.

My question concerns the recent title switch to Morishima in ROH. I love the idea of a monster champion, and think it was a smart idea to give Homicide an abbreviated reign (as too many long reigns would seem contrived). However, do you think they made a mistake having Morishima lose to Samoa Joe just one night before? It seemed to strip a layer of intrigue and opportunity away from his character; that being the question of who could stop him.

It depends on how you look at it.  I can see your point about keeping Morishima undefeated on his way to the title, but at the same time, having him lose to Joe sets up a logical rematch down the road between Morishima and "the one man in ROH who beat him".  That is, it would have, if TNA had not pulled Joe out of Ring Of Honor.

First of all, I love your site, and spend more time at work reading it than I do work.  Anyway, what would you think of TNA signing Marty Jannetty?  It seems like to me they are trying to take guys who are traditionally X division and making them mid level guys, i.e. Christopher Daniels, Jerry Lynn, and kind of separating them from the younger crew like Shelly, Sabin, Sonjay etc.  In my head it would be neat to see them throw Jannetty into the mix.  Jerry Lynn vs. Marty Jannetty might be an interesting draw for the company.  What do you think?

Personally, I would love to see Marty Jannetty in the mix in TNA or WWE.  Despite his outside the ring problems, whenever Jannetty has had a chance to just wrestle, he has impressed (look at this match with Kurt Angle as an example).  It's a shame that someone with as much talent as Marty has seen his career stalled due to mistakes made outside the ring.  Do I think TNA will bring in Jannetty, when there is a lot of talent they already don't seem to have time for?  I doubt it, but I'd love to see it, and Lynn vs. Jannetty would be a fantastic match.

What are you impressions of Mike Awesome's ECW title run? I have always thought it hurt ECW because while he was champ he didn't fight the top names in the company. Guys like Tommy Dreamer, Raven, Credible and Storm were having tag match main events. What are your thoughts on it?

I don't think his run hurt ECW at all.  Obviously, him leaving with the title did, but looking at his reign prior to that, I don't see a problem with it.  He came in and won the title in a three way with Taz and Masato Tanaka, then went on to beat both men in singles matches (including a back and forth trade of the title with Tanaka) and also beat Kid Kash, Rhino, Johnny Smith, Yoshihiro Tajiri, Spike Dudley, Rod Price, New Jack, Simon Diamond, Little Guido, PN News and Mikey Whipwreck in title defenses.  He was being build up into a monster, and had just started working with Dreamer, Credible & Storm in tag matches (teaming with Raven) when he left the company.  Had he remained there, I'm sure some singles bouts would have come out of the tag feud, and of course, the ultimate goal was to have Mike Awesome vs. Rob Van Dam which due to injury and Awesome's departure, never happened.

Okay, now this might be a REALLY stupid Question, but hear me out. The Q you answered on 2/14 regarding the Battle Royal elimination stipulations got me thinking. What would happen if Zach Gowen entered a Battle Royal? (I'm assuming he hasn't?) I'm not trying to make a joke at his expense, but him having only one leg, and therefore only one foot, would it be possible for him to be eliminated at all? I could've pictured WWE doing something like they did with the abysmal tag match between Brian Christopher/Jerry Lawler and Al Snow/Head (where Brian connected a bottle of "Head & Shoulders" shampoo to Head to pin it...okay that was kinda funny...), like someone tossing Gowen out then tossing his artificial leg out after him. I'm sure Zach would take it in stride and it would be interesting. Has this situation ever happened before?

You are right, that is a really stupid question.
