PWINSIDER Q & A: COMBINING THE TAG BELTS, TURNING CENA, STING TO WWE, WWE AND DIRECTV, NEW TALENTS AND MORE

By Dave Scherer on 2007-04-25 10:00:00

Last Monday I saw the audience in Italy boo John Cena and actually cheer for Edge and Orton. With Cena getting booed as often as he is wouldn't it make sense to either turn him into a heel or take the belt from him? Is it doing more harm than good to keep pushing him if he's causing the audience to root for the two biggest heels on RAW?

Right now, it comes down to the fact that Cena sells a lot of merchandise and a lot of the fans love him (while others do love to boo him).  I do agree that creative isn't doing him any favors in the way that they book him at times.  Obviously, he will get booed a lot when he wrestles faces, but I think a bigger issue is that they need to book him as "tougher" to the male fans who hate him.  I remember back in ECW, the fans hated Tommy Dreamer.  Then, he did an angle where he took a hellacious beating from Sandman, and the crowd got behind him and chanted "he's hardcore".  So, they can do the same thing with Cena if they want to.  They just have to want to.  I don't think turning him heel will fix the problem right now.  Knowing the fans that jeer him now, they would probably start cheering for him if WWE did that.  If creative is truly good at their jobs, they should be able to find a way to get the fans to cheer him.

I am a huge fan of Sting, has WWE ever pursued him? Would they ever consider this?

They have gone after him a few times but Sting never agreed to come in.  He has often said in the past that he didn't like the risqué stuff that WWE was doing at the time (which was kind of funny since WCW and TNA have also done some racy things themselves).  My gut feeling is that Sting has made a lot of money so he doesn't need to work.  He also has seen how other "WCW creations" were treated in WWE and is probably wary of going there and being jobbed out.  I don't blame him a bit.  I would think the exact same thing if I were him.

I was curious to know just what is Direct TV's stance on having WWE 24/7 on one of its channels? Do you think it will ever make it to the countries largest satellite provider?

DirecTV is still working on the release of on-demand video for their system.  I think once they get that in place, there's a good chance they will try and make a deal with WWE.  It's a proven fact that DirecTV users are willing to spend more for their television viewing so getting 24-7 makes perfect sense to their business model.  But, it probably won't be easy.  WWE and DirecTV have butted heads in the past when Vince McMahon tried to get a bigger cut of the pie from them on PPVs and took his events off of system for months.

I haven't been watching WWE programming in recent years, so I was hoping you could give me a little background info on the following superstars I've seen on wwe.com that I am totally unaware of. Just where they were before WWE, and any previous names they've wrestled under. ECW's Ariel, Santino Marella, Trevor Murdoch, the two members of Cryme Tyme, and Robbie and Rory McAllister.

Wait a second, you don't watch their programming, but you go to their website?  That's interesting to me.  All of the above came up through WWE's developmental system.  I believe that they were all indy workers before coming to WWE but probably never heard of them then.

I'm watching SmackDown! at the moment, and as I watched the Hardys come out I was thinking about how good of a match they and London/Kendrick would have, since if they have already I sure missed it. So on the same token, what would you think if WWE ever decided to unify the tag team division so that we could see less crap like Cade & Murdoch and more quality teams like Deuce & Domino, Hardys, Kendrick and London, etc.. on RAW and SmackDown both? ..And what is the chance of any of the higher-ups in the office ever doing such a thing?

It's my opinion that would be a great idea and could, if done properly, put value back into the tag belts.  Right now, they are largely an afterthought, especially on Raw where they are mostly used as angle fodder for the top talents.  With them doing more inter-brand stuff, I would love to see the tag belts become like the Women's Title, in that the titles appear on the show of whoever has the belts.  I think that could make them more important again and open up a lot of possibilities for storylines.
