PWINSIDER Q & A: EDGE VS. BENOIT TITLE FEUD, VAMPIRO IN WWE, SUNNY DAYS ENDING IN THE WWF, THE STATUS OF THE IC TITLE AND MORE

By Dave Scherer on 2007-04-18 10:33:00

Can you see the WWE putting the WWE Championship on Edge and then have him feud with Chris Benoit? This would be a top feud, in my opinion, as we haven't seen this match in recent times and the two of them can really put on a great match. They could even begin the feud so that it included their tour of Canada and maybe finish with a 30 minute Iron Man Match.

I think that the two men would have great matches if they did that but I don't know about it happening at this point in time.  WWE hasn't really been pushing Benoit in a top role lately and I don't know if he has the charisma to pull off a second run with the title.  His work certainly is more than good enough however but WWE already played the "no one ever thought we would give him the belt" card so I don't see them doing it again.  I do see Edge staying in the top mix and he belongs there.  He is the best heel that the company has right now.

Has the WWE ever had any interest in Vampiro? And if so why has he never been brought in? I'm thinking especially after the WCW buyout and his strong feud with Sting, Vampiro could of become a very credible mid-card performer. Was the problem that Vampiro didn't want to join the WWE?

That may have been the problem, or at least part of it.  I know that when he was in WCW he wanted to leave there and go to ECW but that didn't happen.  He liked his stuff to be gritty and edgy and thought ECW was the place for him.  It never happened though.

I also know that Vamp was eccentric and I don't ever remember hearing that WWE had any interest in him.  I think they may have heard stories of his animated personality and got a little scared off.  The fact is, he has been a free agent for years now and WWE has never brought him in so I think that tells a story, quite possibly where both sides are concerned.

How do you see the WWE taking the Intercontinental Title off Umaga? I mean he has already crushed almost the whole RAW mid card and has dominated Cena, Kane and Lashley in their matches. At some point he will have to defend the Title and whoever takes it would gain a massive rub from beating him. Who can you see at this stage taking the belt from him?

I wrote this over the weekend before Raw.  Here is what I wrote.  " I hate to say this but honestly, I don't think it really matters.  It's very clear how little the IC Title means.  It a prop at this point.  It's very clear that Umaga's feud with Bobby Lashley is what is important to WWE so the IC belt has taken a backseat.  I don't know who will beat him for the belt but what I can tell you is it's not on the radar at this time."  That is kind of what ended up happening, but at least they did a good job in getting Santino Marella over with the surprise title change.

About Sunny, Dave wrote in a recent Q&A: “given the way she left the company after getting quite the Hollywood attitude, I don't see them rushing to induct her.” Can you explain this?

Sunny was a phenom, for real.  She broke into the business as the hot, slim girlfriend of Chris Candido down in Smoky Mountain Wrestling.  When she made the big time in the WWF, let's just say she was still hot and slim, but a lot more busty than she was before.  As her character grew in popularity, do did, according to a number of people, her attitude backstage.  It got to the point where people I talked to in the company were complaining about her actions all the time.  I even saw it first hand myself one night at the ECW Arena.  She was there to watch her fiancé Chris Candido wrestle and had on a white outfit (and looked hot).  A guy who worked for the company accidentally stepped on her shoe (and it was her fault because she wasn't looking where she was going and stepped in front of him).  It ended up that there was a dirt mark on the shoe.  She told the guy to go down and clean it.  He laughed, thinking she was kidding.  When she made it very clear that she wasn't, he went down and cleaned it off rather than cause an incident, even though it was a ridiculous thing for her to ask.  Let's just say that her acting that way wasn't an isolated incident in the WWF locker room.  She was a huge character that was deemed expendable anyway.  That says it all about what people in the company thought by the end of her run.  It really is sad because she had so much talent.

Do you ever see WWE looking at any of the talent in RPW ( Real Pro Wrestling) and are you aware of their product and if so any opinions on it?

If Jim Ross were still in charge of talent relations, I could see them scouting RPW for sure.  Ross was always about finding athletes to become pro wrestlers, even when he knew that his boss Vince McMahon liked the big guys with the pretty bodies.   Ross felt that athletes would hold up better to the rigors of a very hard business while pretty boy bodybuilders generally didn't.  I totally agree with him and think it was a big loss for WWE when he left the position.

Johnny Ace, who heads the department now, is more of a company guy who gives Vinnie Mac what he wants.  If Vince wants pretty bodies, that is what Ace will find him.  So, while they may look at some of the guys there, if they are not 6'2 and 250 ripped pounds, they probably don't have much of chance of getting picked up.
