Ohio Valley Wrestling TV Report 1/20/07
OVW opened up with Dean Hill and Kenny Bolin previewing what was scheduled for the WWE developmental territory's show:
*OVW champion Paul Burchall vs. top contender Steve Lewington.
*A "shocking" update on OVW Women's champion Katie Lea being laid out by the Untouchables and Cherry last week.
*Boris Alexiev, Daniel Rodimer, and the team of Charles Evans & Jason LaRoche in action.
"Big Deal" Daniel Rodimer vs. Jaimin Olivencia
Olivencia was billed as the "Nuyorican" from Buffalo, New York. The crowd chanted "You can't wrestle" at Rodimer. That's pretty funny, considering he's had one TV appearance. He's definitely green thus far, though. Rodimer takes the house mic from the ring announcer and touts himself as "The Big Deal." He said that unlike the fans, "I am all that." He claimed to be the biggest thing to ever hit OVW and told the fans to shut their mouths and deal with it.
Rodimer completely dwarfed his opponent and manhandled him easily. Jaimin tried for a sunset flip but Rodimer broke it with a punch to the head. Rodimer pressed and slammed Jaimin down into the center of the ring. Rodimer nailed a full nelson slam and scored the pin. If this was designed to be a 1980s squash, mission accomplished.
Backstage, Chet the Jett came up to Steve Lewington, who was tying his boots. Chet had his back to the camera and demanded, "Get out!" Lewington told him to calm down but Chet repeated the claim. Lewington threw his chair to the side and said he had a title match tonight and if Chet had an issue, do something. Chet kept looking beyond Lewington, who turned around and looked like he was ready to fight. Jacon Duncan appeared in the doorway and stared down with them before backing away. Lewington thanked Chet for having his back. Chet told Lewington that he didn't have his back, because Lewington has what he wants, a shot at the OVW title.
Charles "The Hammer" Evans and Justin "The Ox" LaRoche vs. "Fearless" Jack Bull & Atlas Da Bone
Sosay, Bull's publicist, introduced Jack Bull, who staggered drunkenly out the wrong door. She then introduced the debuting Atlas Da Bone. Bone is a muscular tattooed guy flashing a ton of gold chains and flashing money. He's got a 1970s perm haircut that would make Mike Brady proud. He reminds me of a larger Disco Inferno for some reason. Evans and Bull started the match. Bull nearly got the pin with a rollup before staggering around. He burped into LaRoche's face. Bull hit a combination headlock takedown and headscissors on his opponents. Da Bone was bouncing around in the corner while waiting for the tag. Bull ducks a double clothesline attempt and tags in Da Bone. Da Bone hits a leaping clothesline and then hits a suplex and a splash on LaRoche. Da Bone backdropped LaRoche over the top to the apron, but La Roche snapped his neck across the top. Evans and LaRoche pinned up Da Bone and slammed him backwards, and Da Bone was pinned. They began working over Bull, but Aaron Stevens hit the ring with a chair for the save. Steven's storyline continues.
Backstage, OVW Troubleshooter Danny Basham approached The Untouchables and Cherry. He said what they did was disgusting. The Untouchables praised Cherry for kicking Katie Lea all over the ring and said she would have won the OVW Women's championship if it wasn't for Lea cheating (Reminder: Untouchables got Cherry DQ'd). Basham asked if she wanted a rematch then. Cherry agreed and said anytime, anyplace. Basham said there would be a rematch later tonight, then informed the Untouchables they were banned from ringside. Cherry looked like someone had run over her kitten.
Boris Alexiev vs. Rombola
Alexiev manhandled Rombola early with kicks and strikes. He went for the chest kick but Rombola evaded it. Rombola tried to outwrestle Alexiev, but was kicked in the gut. Boris cinched in the "Riddle of Steel" and that was all she wrote. The old school build for the old school monster Russian wrestling heel continues.
Bad Kompany (as it turns out, it's spelled with a K) walked out of a room. Milena noted it was cool being champion. Her delivery was terrible, so she'll pop up on Raw in a main event position this week I bet. Shawn Osborne said it was even cooler losing their dead weight, which was a reference to Eddie Kraven. No idea what happened, but he was released apparently as he's no longer training with OVW. Seth Skyfire showed up and insulted Bad Kompany. He challenged them to a fight. Osborne told Skyfire that if he fought them now, he'd lose his chance at a TV title shot and he's got no one to help him. OVW Southern Tag Team champions Cody Runnels and Shawn Spears walked into the building. Skyfire asked them if they were doing anything tonight and they said they weren't. He offered them a chance to be his partners and they agreed. Skyfire said he'd see them later tonight and they left. Osborne said to Kruel, "Well Mike, guess you are on your own." When Kruel asked him what he was talking about, Osborne said, "I'm blind!" and went back into his routine. Osborne is pretty funny.
Dean Hill and Kenny Bolin wondered what was going to happen later tonight.
OVW Womens champion Katie Kea vs. Cherry (Deuce & Domino Banned)
We return with Cherry making her way to the ring, upset she's left alone for the match. Lea came to ring all anxious for revenge, chasing Cherry around the ring. When they returned to the ring, Cherry kicked at Lea but Lea shrugged it off and took down Cherry, then slapped her. Cherry retreated but Lea followed her and slammed her into the apron. Cherry tries to kick Lea but the champ catches her foot, spins Cherry around and clotheslines her. Lea missed a charge in the corner, the hits a missile dropkick off the turnbuckles. Lea hits her finisher, the Catnip (hangman's neckbreaker) and score the pin. Match was short and OK for what it was considering Cherry's role as a non-wrestler.
Deuce and Domino hit the ring and grab Lea. They hold her for Cherry to slap. High Dosage, Ryan Reeves and Jon Bolen hit the ring for the save. That was weird, considering they were pretty much heels the week before.
OVW TV champion Seth Skyfire & OVW Tag Team champions Cody Runnels & Shawn Spears vs. Bad Kompany....or so it seems
Sean Osborne took the mic and said that bad Kompany wasn't going to be left alone because they had friends in the back who could help them...Mikey and Nicky, the Frat Boys. Yep, it's Mike Mondo and Nick Nemeth, last seen on Monday Night Raw when DX mailed the Spirit Squad back to OVW. I guess Ken Doane was the only one who escaped the wrath of FedEx. Kruel will team with them. Both wore powerder blue tights with either a visor or a backwards blue cap.
Skyfire and Mikey start with some back and forth wrestling. Nicky distracted Akyfire, allowing Mikey to hit him from behind. The Frat Boys worked over Skyfire. Skyfire came back and tagged out to Runnels, who used a wristlock to take Nemeth down. The heels regained control. Runnel's facials and body language are really good for this stage of his development. The Tag champs hit a double Russian Legsweep on Kruel as Skyfire dropkicks him. They then do a triple backdrop on the heels right before a commercial break.
When they return, Skyfire was being worked over in the heels' corner. Spears kept trying to come in and help, allowing the heels to triple-team Skyfire as the referee admonished him. Nice basic layout to the six man with the heels building a lot of heat. It finally breaks down with all six brawling in the ring. The champs clothesline the Frat Boys over the top to the floor, then hit stereo dives to the floor.
Kruel is left with Skyfire and assumes he's got the advantage but Skyfire fires back. Bad Kompany tosses Osborne's cane in but when Kruel strikes, Skyfire ducks and it gets caught in the ropes. Skyfire kicks the cane and Kruel strikes himself in the head. Skyfire nailed Kruel in gut with the cane, then avoided Osborne, backdropping him out of the ring. He nails Kruel with the cane again and scores the pin.
Backstage, OVW champion Paul Burchall was in Troubleshooter Danny Basham's office, demanding that Jacob Duncan and Chet the Jett be allowed nowhere near the ring. He said that his title means the world to him. Basham said that he has a plan ready to execute and Lewington would get his title shot without interference tonight.
When we return from commercial, Basham is in the ring and announces that because there are guys in the back that want their title shot, there could be interference tonight. He announced that security will be posted in each corner to patrol. He then said he's going to be parked at ringside himself, and if he sees any foul play, he'll handle it accordingly, pulling out a police baton.
OVW champion Paul Burchall vs. Steve Lewington
Burchall went right for a double leg takedown but Lewington turns it into a modified armdrag takedown, then scored a quick two count with a backslide. Lewington takes Burchall down with modified headscissors. Burchall goes to the top, but Lewington catches him and slams Burchall into the ring. Jacob Duncan made his way to the ring but security and Basham stop him. Lewington gets out from the ring and begin yelling at Duncan. That allows Burchall a chance to respond and then attack Lewington, slamming him into the ringpost outside. Lewington is nearly counted out but returns. Lewington tried to get several near falls. Burchall takes him down with a clothesline, then slams him. Chet the Jett enters the ringside area from another area but is backed off by Basham. Burchall was distracted, which gave Lewington a chance to recover and get several near falls. Lewington began to unload with punches and forearms. Lewington clotheslines Burchall in the corner. Burchall comes back with the jumping neckbreaker for the pin, retaining the OVW title. They end the episode with Burchall triumphant in the ring and the other challengers dying to get a piece of him, but Basham is standing in their way.
Match was OK, telling a decent story about the outside distractions causing problems for champion and challenger alike. Another OK episode. From this point on, it should be interesting to see how OVW TV moves forward, given directly after this episode aired, the WWE's bloodletting began with (among others) Danny Basham, Seth Skyfire, Jack Bull, and Ryan Reeves all being released from their WWE contracts. We'll have to see how OVW's storylines and booking deal with not one, but several curveballs being thrown at them. We'll do that Monday with the next installment, catching up every day with OVW reports.
