PWINSIDER Q&A: SID SCREWING WWF? WHY WWE WON'T LET ECW JUST BE 'ECW', THE GOBBLEDY GOOKER & MORE

By Mike Johnson on 2007-02-04 11:43:00

I heard a rumor today that I have never heard before. He said that there was some sort of screw job by Sid back at WM8. I did a Google search for this and found two versions of the story. I read that Sid was supposed to be pinned by Hogan, but kicked out after the leg drop. In order to save the match, they sent Papa Shango in to cause the DQ. I also read that Papa Shango was late for his run in to get the DQ and with Hogan covering Sid in the ring, Sid had no choice but to kick out to save the “DQ run in” ending. Is there any truth to the rumor that Sid screwed Vince/Hogan at WM8?

I don't believe that story to be true because if it was, WWE never would have brought Sid back down the line, much less given him a run with the WWF championship in 1996.  I believe there was a timing problem with the finish but not because Sid pulled a fast one on the company.

Who was the Gobbledy Gooker?

The Gooker was none other than Hector Guerrero of the famous Guerrero wrestling family.

What was the story behind Jim Ross debuting at Wrestlemania 9 and then going to a more background role, doing interviews and WWF radio? Was he originally meant to be the voice of wrestling or did he finally become the lead announcer when Vince got out of it?

Jim Ross was hired to be a member of the announcing team at the time, but not the top announcer.  It was a strategic move to hurt WCW, although Ross wanted out at that point and he was eventually groomed for the top announcer's position, but not before he began to change his announcing style into something closer to what WWF sees as their announcing style.

I understand Carlito has a brother that wrestles?  Is he going to come to WWE too?

Carlito does indeed have a younger brother that wrestles in Puerto Rico, Eddie Colon.  He's done some independent work and there's talk from time to time about he being signed to a WWE developmental deal but nothing has come of it yet.  There is also a Colon sister, Stacy, that has been involved in storylines in the family's company in Puerto Rico, the World Wrestling Council.

I don't understand this.  Why bring back ECW if they aren't going to let it be ECW?  What's the point?

If there's one person who is responsible for it, it's Vince McMahon.  For lack of a better way of describing it, McMahon sees the old ECW as a regional group that did little in the way of having a national spotlight, so he'd rather run the revived version of the company his way, which he feels is what's brought him to the dance.  Once Paul Heyman was removed from the equation, there was no one fighting for the "ECW" mentality.  The wrestlers involved aren't politically connected and a number of them have been shot down by agents and other people in power as "not being stars."  Dave Lagana, who currently writes the product, isn't going to stick his neck out and chance following Heyman to the chopping block.  So, ECW today is what you see thanks to those factors, among others.
