PWINSIDER Q&A: MICHAELS VS. ANGLE, WWE DVD SETS, MELINA AND MORE

By Buck Woodward on 2007-01-04 10:00:00

Answered on 1/3

I have recently re-watched the classic Michaels vs. Angle match from WM 21. At the start of the match it looked very stiff as if Michaels was trying to prove that he could hang with Angle i.e. mat wrestling.  Was this the case, do these two have a genuine dislike for each other or was this just two great workers doing what they do best?

I heard nothing about any dislike between the two at the time.  Obviously, the story of the early part of the match was Michaels "hanging with" Angle when it came to mat wrestling.  What we saw was two great workers putting on a match and attempting to live up to a lot of hype that had been built up around them.

Why is it on DVDs such as Chris Benoit and Bret Hart you get a fantastic career retrospective and then extra matches on bonus discs but on others (i.e. Hulk Hogan, Undertaker) you just get matches one after another I believe that the WWE is doing this because these DVDs i.e Hogan, Taker and Flair have been some of the best selling but I know in my case apart from maybe the Flair set I don't believe I have watched a single match from the Hogan or Taker sets, what are your thoughts especially on the god awful Hogan set?

Obviously, not all WWE sets are the same.  The Undertaker set or the Hulk Hogan Ultimate Anthology set were designed to simply be massive collections of matches.  The Benoit, Eddie Guerrero, RVD and Rey Mysterio sets are more designed to be documentaries with matches included as extras.  The Bret Hart set is a unique one, in that Bret Hart had a tremendous amount of input, so it became more a combination of the two WWE styles.  The Ric Flair set was designed not to be a Ric Flair documentary, but rather a documentary on several specific matches in his career.  Personally, I thought the Hogan Ultimate Anthology was a very enjoyable collection of matches for Hogan fans.  If you wanted a documentary look at Hogan's career, you could pick up Hulk Still Rules instead.

If three years ago someone would have come up to you and tell you that a Jamal vs John Cena WWE title match would headline the first PPV of 2007, what would your reaction have been?

I'd probably wonder what happened to Brock Lesnar, Triple H, Kurt Angle and Chris Benoit.  Cena was a midcard player three years ago, but it wouldn't be inconceivable that he could have become a main eventer.  Umaga is a more interesting thought, since this was prior to really displaying his skills in All Japan Pro Wrestling, so I doubt anyone would have predicted him as a main eventer then.

I read somewhere that Melina was a contestant on Tough Enough. Is this true? If so, which one?

No, she was not a Tough Enough contestant.  She paid her dues working on the indy scene in California, then moved on to OVW before being brought up to the WWE main roster.  First in the short-lived role as a "make-up artist" on Raw, and then as part of MNM.

Hey guys just wondering what happened to Ahmed Johnson and what were the circumstances in him leaving the WWE?

Basically, Ahmed Johnson was someone WWF pushed really hard, but between his propensity for hurting people during matches and being unable to stay healthy himself, the company decided to let him go.  He worked on the indy scene and had a brief run in WCW as "Big T" but the last time I heard about him working a match was four years ago.
