PWINSIDER Q & A: VINCE SCREWING THE UNDERTAKER, BISCHOFF BEING MISUNDERSTOOD, WWE VOTING, TNA VS. WWE AND MORE

By Dave Scherer on 2007-01-03 15:10:00

TNA's work schedule is much easier than the on the road 300+ days a year WWE schedule, and that's been said as one of the reasons people like Christian Cage decided to go to TNA instead of resigning to WWE, but my question is how does the management/worker relationship compare? Is TNA generally seen as more lax than WWE? And is that even really a good thing for the overall product?

From what I have heard, backstage is pretty similar to WWE.  People know what they have to do and they do it when they are at TVs and PPVs.  The major difference is that TNA doesn't do house shows and the TV isn't taped weekly, so they aren't at "work" as often.  I wouldn't say TNA is lax at all with the workers.  They just have a lighter schedule.

I was reading the IGN.com interview with Eric Bischoff, and to paraphrase one thing Eric said was that fans don't seem to separate Eric Bischoff the person and Eric Bischoff the cold-hearted bastard. It got me thinking that what he said does seem true, that even though fans know wrestlers are playing characters on TV, they are seen differently than other celebrities (i.e. In the movie "Broken Arrow" John Travolta's character steals a nuke, but no one in real life is going to accuse Travolta of being a terrorist/traitor seemingly the way UPN was afraid of the perception the "Muhammad Hassan" character was receiving). Do you think this unique view of wrestling is unfair in 2006, where WWE and Vince McMahon say it's just "entertainment" like everything else on TV?

I think that when Vince says it's entertainment, he's right.  Hassan shouldn't have been judged by any criteria other than a company decided to use him as a character in a storyline.  If people object because they think Hassan is a real person, they are clueless.  If they object because it is tasteless, then I agree with them.

As for Bischoff, a lot of why people view him as sinister is because of all the stories that came out behind the scenes when he was running WCW.  For example, he raided ECW for talent.  He fired Steve Austin while he was rehabbing an injury.  He even gave away Mick Foley's WWE Title win (which was taped the week before) on live TV.  I think he forgets all of the things he did back then.  A lot of people in the company didn't think too highly of him as he was often seen as arrogant by people who worked for him.

Does the voting for WWE Cyber Sunday really matter? Are they showing the real results?

According to a number of people in WWE, yes, the voting was legit.

Can you tell me when (and why) TNA started using a 6 sided ring?

They began to use the ring when they debuted on Fox Sports Net in June of 2004.  Their feeling was that it gave the product a different feel and I think they were right.

Do you think Vince McMahon would ever ask Undertaker to lose at a Wrestlemania?? And in a situation that could easily turn into Montreal Screwjob 2006, would Vince ever DARE try screwing Undertaker over?

Would he ever ask him to lose at Mania?  Maybe, if it made sense.  And if it made sense, Taker (in my opinion) would do what he always does and be a professional.  I don't ever see Vince screwing Taker though.  Vince has way too much respect for him, plus Taker stuck with WWE all the way through the Monday Night Wars and has always been a loyal soldier.  I don't see Vince ever hosing him.
