INDY KINGDOM: SUPER 8 REPORT & THOUGHTS, LOTS FROM PUERTO RICO, MICK FOLEY WORKS INDY SHOW, AND LOTS MORE

By Jess McGrath on 2004-04-04 22:46:00

Mick Foley made an unadvertised in-ring appearance at Mike O'Brien's Northeast Wrestling show in Newark, NJ on 4/3. The scheduled Jerry Lawler vs. Al Snow main event, with Foley and Coach in the respective corners, was turned into a tag with Lawler & Foley vs. Snow & Coach after Coach kept interfering. Lawler took almost all the bumps and worked hard. They did the Al Snow indy tradition of busting out all the WWE finishers, including a pedigree (Snow on Lawler), figure-four (same deal), the worm (by Coach), people's elbow (Coach), a crossface (Snow on Lawler), and the Hogan legdrop (Coach). Foley pulled out an old WWWF finisher, the dreaded Baron Von Raschke claw, which he used on Coach. Snow tried to do the Mr. Socko to Foley, but it ended up with Foley giving the move to both Snow and Coach at the same time. Finish had Lawler piledrive Snow and Foley covered for the win. It was a good night for Foley, as he also made a killing with Polaroid sales.

In addition to these names, Dusty Rhodes also was brought in. He beat Simon Diamond in a good match, said to be one of the better Dusty indy matches. Also of note: Xavier beat Red (good but short; they went on right before the main event and I suppose were being respectful by not doing too much), and Julio Dinero beat Johnny Heartbreaker. The valets, Kara and Michelle, got into a catfight in that one. Attendance was about 1,200, one of the largest non-ROH indy crowds in the Northeast in a while.

Lucha Libre de Oregon, the lucha company that's been running very successful shows in Woodburn (drawing anywhere from 400 to 1,500), was scheduled to start on Univision in Oregon this past weekend. Don Koss (former Don Owen TV commentator who owns several Hispanic radio stations), "Grappler" Lynn Denton, and David Sierra are behind it. The plan, at least for the initial shows, is to cobble together programs using bits and pieces from all their previous events.

All Pro Wrestling is bringing Asian Cooger in for their 5/15 show in King City, CA.

IWA Mid-South will be having a series of interpromotional matches with NWA Wildside at their Derby Madness 2004 event in New Albany, IN on 4/30.

Portland Wrestling ran the Kliever Armory in Portland on 3/28. The Grappler and Top Gun (David Sierra), who had a feud in the old Don Owen Portland territory around 1988 or so, teamed to put over Pacific Northwest tag team champions Dr. Luther & Black Dragon. Current Northwest singles champ is Scotty Mac, who beat Damon Scythe on this show. After a tag match with Skag Rollins & Ladies Choice vs. Lewis Rach & Tony Kozina, Rollins and LC jumped Kozina and tried to cut off some of his hair. They also did another angle later where they attacked him and ripped some chunks out of his hair. Seems like they are building, Victoria-Molly style, for a hair match down the road. Scoot Andrews is scheduled to debut at the next taping on 4/10. They've been introducing Andrews on TV over the last few weeks with pre-taped interviews.

At the ECCW show in Surrey, BC on 4/2, Vance Nevada retained the heavyweight title beating Matt Borne. They switched the Canadian jr. title, as Major Hardway dropped the strap to Tony Kozina. They are doing an interpromotional angle with British Columbia indy All Star Wrestling. ASW head Fabio is working a program with Scotty Mac and went over in their match on this show.

Tennessee Mountain Wrestling taped three weeks of TV for their UPN 32 show on 4/3 in Lenoir City, TN. Jack Miller won the heavyweight title from Lance Erikson after Dirty White Boy ran in, laid out Erikson with a chair, and put Miller on top. DWB beat Memphis Mafia #2 earlier when #1 ran in for a DQ. They got heat on DWB, with Miller making the save. Tag champions Sammy V & Ric Cannon retained over the Mafia in a match taped for 4/8. Ric Conners asked for a rematch, which will be titles vs. masks, at the 4/17 Knoxville show. Return date for Lenoir City is 5/1.

Hawaii Championship Wrestling had shows on 3/27 and 3/28 as part of a weekend sports carnival at Aloha Stadium in Honolulu. They had interpromotional matches with IXWF (NWA Hawaii) at both shows. 3/27 main event was the East Coast Connection (NWA) over Tiki & Kapu (NWA) and the Nightmarchers (IXWF) in a three way. They came back with the same match the next day, with Nightmarchers winning with a double pin on Tiki and Kapu after the ECC walked out about 5:00 into the match. Kenjito Katahira went to a draw with Cholo. Katahira challenged for a rematch for 4/17 in Kaneohe and wanted Cholo to put up the IXWF jr. title in that one.
