WWE CRUISERWEIGHTS UPDATE

By Mike Johnson on 2016-07-19 00:15:00

During Monday Night Raw, it was announced that The Cruiserweight Division will officially return, exclusively, to Raw after the brand split.

WWE revived the Cruiserweight division with the currently airing Cruiserweight Classic tournament on the WWE Network.  There had been discussions dating all the way back to 2011 about the company trying to revive the division, which was shuttered in 2008 with Hornswoggle as the final champion.  That version of the division was imported over from WCW when WWE purchased that company in 2001.

WWE brought 32 Cruiserweights, most of whom are not currently signed to the company, in for the CWC with Triple H promising two weeks ago during the Bracketology special on the WWE Network that the CWC was not a "once and done."  With the ongoing tournament, it would appear that the 9/4 live special on the Network will be crowning the first "new" Cruiserweight champion.

In speaking to a WWE source after Raw, we are told that WWE has not yet signed any new talents officially for the division but you can expect to hear that talents currently working the CWC will be offered full-time deals of some sort, given they can pass the WWE medical testing prior to signing.   WWE has a number of the CWC talents in mind for those slots.
