TNA'S CONTROVERSIAL SIGNING: WILL IT HELP OR HURT TNA ... AND THE WRESTLING INDUSTRY?

By Buck Woodward on 2007-07-30 12:00:18

As reported here on PWInsider.com last night, TNA has signed suspended NFL star Adam "Pacman" Jones.  While details as to how Jones will be used in TNA are not yet known, needless to say bringing in the Tennessee Titans cornerback at this time is a controversial move given his current public image.  Jones is currently suspended by the NFL for his personal conduct off the field, including a much publicized shooting incident at a Las Vegas strip club that left former independent pro wrestler Tommy Urbanski paralyzed.

Even at this early stage, a lot of thoughts and opinions have come out about TNA's decision.  On the one hand, the publicity that comes with Jones could show the mainstream media (who tend to have tunnel vision in this aspect) that there is professional wrestling besides WWE in the U.S.  It could also be a huge boost to TNA's business, simply because controversy often equals cash, and new fans could check out TNA as a result of Jones being involved.  On the other hand, Jones being involved could give mainstream media outlets another target to shoot at when it comes to portraying wrestling in a negative light.  Also, and history has shown this to often be the case, bringing in an outside sports star doesn't help a wrestling company in the long term, as once the sports star is finished with his run, any viewers he brought with him stop tuning in.

There really are two ways to look at the Jones signing.  Will it help or hurt TNA, and what bearing will it have on wrestling overall given the current media scrutiny of the industry? That leads to today's poll question:

What do you think of TNA's decision to sign Pacman Jones?

I think the signing will help TNA, and be good for wrestling overall.
I think the signing will help TNA, but be bad for wrestling overall.
I think the signing will hurt TNA, but not matter for wrestling overall.
I think the signing will hurt TNA, and hurt wrestling overall.
I don't think the signing will have any bearing on TNA's business or wrestling overall.
