WWE RECOGNIZES IT MAY NEED TO MAKE CHANGES TO THE WELLNESS POLICY AFTER THE BENOIT TRAGEDY

By Dave Scherer on 2007-07-02 17:44:14

Earlier today I mentioned that WWE needs to tighten up the markers in their current Wellness policy to lower the ratios of steroids that WWE allows in their wrestlers when they take a test.  Now, WWE is recognizing this issue publicly.  In a story posted in Long Island's Newsday this afternoon, Alfonso Castillo wrote the following:

World Wrestling Entertainment, told Newsday in a statement that it "will make any improvements necessary" to its wellness policy, which tests WWE performers for steroids and other substances.

In a statement released Monday, WWE stood by its drug testing policy, saying it is "one of the most aggressive of its kind compared to testing programs initiated by competitive sports organizations, and is unique for an entertainment company."

While declining to address any specific criticisms of the policy, WWE said in its statement that it "will make any improvements necessary to maintain it as a state-of-the-art program to the utmost betterment of our performers, fans, and business partners."

"It was designed to send a very clear message that WWE finds the abuse of drugs and steroids to be unacceptable," the statement said.

As I suggested last week, I would like to see them lower the steroid ratio to 4:1 (which is the world standard), make the workers justify the need for prescriptions for steroids and also implement neurological screening and psychiatric counseling for their workers.  The company could also help itself by redefining the culture of WWE by not pushing hugely muscled wrestlers who can't work.
